Tennesse State Runner-Up Jake Mason, Sun Devil Legacy, Verbals to Arizona State for 2022

NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Jake Mason of Nashville, Tenn. has announced his verbal commitment to continue his academic and swimming career at Arizona State University as a member of the Sun Devils’ Class of 2026.

He will join Jonny Kulow and  Parker Reynolds in Tempe at the start of the 2022-23 season.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m extremely proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University! A huge thanks to my friends, family and coaches for getting me to where I am today! Thank you to Coach Bowman and Coach Behm for this amazing opportunity! I can’t wait to be a Sun Devil! Forks Up!”

Mason, who trains year-round with Ensworth Aquatics under coaches Christian Bahr and Joe Goeken, won the 400 IM and finished third in the mile at the Southeastern Championships in February 2020. He most recently competing at the Senior Southeastern Championships where he earned silver in the 400 IM and achieved 100% best times at the Southeastern LCM Championships in July 2019.

He has made some impressive time drops over the past year, shaving off 15 seconds in the 500 free and 12 seconds in the 400 IM.

His best times include:

  • 400 IM – 3:59.72
  • 500 free – 4:31.89
  • 200 IM – 1:53.82
  • 200 fly – 1:53.15
  • 200 free – 1:42.13
  • 1000 free – 9:36.68
  • 1650 free – 15:53.40
  • 200 back – 1:52.14

Currently a junior at Ensworth High School, Mason is a three-time individual TISCA State Championship finalist. He was the runner-up in the 500 free and took fourth in the 200 IM as a sophomore while taking 16th in the 200 free during his freshman season.

Arizona State is currently redshirting this season after coming off an unofficial seventh place finish at the 2020 NCAAs before the meet was cancelled to slow down the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mason’s father, Jamie Mason, played water polo for Arizona State University graduating with his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. His mother, Margaret Holmes Mason, swam at Michigan State University from 1989-1993.
