Ten Athletes Get Final Chance To Book Tokyo Ticket At Swim Ireland Performance Meet
Ten swimmers will get their final chance to book a place on the team for Tokyo at the 2021 Swim Ireland Performance Meet which will run from 24-26 June in Dublin.
The event at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre will feature individual Olympic events only with the focus on the 10 athletes who came within 1.5% of a FINA ‘A’ time at the Irish National Team Trials in April.
Those athletes being:
· Jack McMillan
· Niamh Coyne
· Nicholas Quinn
· Eoin Corby
· Danielle Hill
· Brendan Hyland
· Calum Bain
· Conor Ferguson
· Jordan Sloan
· Finn McGeever
Four swimmers booked their spot on the team at the April trials at which 12 national records were set including four by Danielle Hill.
Darragh Greene (100/200 breaststroke), Shane Ryan (100 backstroke), Daniel Wiffen (800 freestyle) and Mona McSharry (100 breaststroke) are the quartet on the plane to Tokyo.
There is also the possibility of at least one relay team making the trip with governing body FINA expected to announce the final Olympic relay rankings on Friday 4 June.
Consideration times can also be posted in Dublin for the European Short-Course Championships in Kazan, Russia, in November and the World Short-Course Championships in Abu Dhabi the following month.
Swim Ireland national performance director Jon Rudd, said:
“When the 2021 Olympic Nomination Policy was revised as part of the ongoing COVID-19 circumstances, we foresaw at that time that athletes within the 1.5% of an Olympic qualification standard would travel into Europe to find a meet of their choosing during June as their final attempt at Tokyo qualification.
“With things as they currently are, we concluded that it was much safer in all regards for such athletes to make this attempt on home soil, avoiding international travel, whilst providing an additional qualification opportunity for those wishing to race in the international short course season at the end of this year.”
