Tech Tuesday: The Benefits of Video Analysis for Swimmers

In many sports like football, basketball, and even water polo, watching film or doing video review is not uncommon. Sports like these record games and plays, which provide valuable insights into both an athlete’s own performance and that of their opponents. This information is used to devise effective strategies, enhance player performance, and increase the team’s chances of success.

In the sport of swimming, watching film can be just as beneficial, and has been for years. USA Swimming, college and club programs have long implemented video review into their approaches. While swimming is much more time-based than these other sports, video analysis has proven to have a positive impact on the growth and development of swimmers.

Many teams and coaches have access to underwater cameras that allow for videos of swimmers below the surface of the water. However, filming out of the water works just as well to review a swimmer’s technique, and apply appropriate adjustments. Not only does video allow swimmers to see how they swim, it also can help provide feedback on how swimmers can change their stroke to be more efficient and to become faster in the water. In this way, coaches can correct form and adjust a swimmer’s technique – such as a start – with the help of visuals.

Race Planning & Performance

Having your coach, teammate, or even a parent or guardian film your races is a great idea for assessing strengths and areas of improvement. Learning from past races is key for growth in the sport of swimming. By watching past races, a swimmer can evaluate their performance, learn how they may need to adjust their race strategy, and plan for others races in the future.

Motivation

Watching past swims can also be a motivator for swimmers and can boost overall morale. Film can serve as a reminder of a swimmer’s capabilities and achievements, which can instill a sense of pride and confidence. Recognizing and celebrating an exceptional effort can boost self-esteem and encourage swimmers to continue to push their limits. Additionally, video analysis allows coaches to emphasize positive aspects and strengths. Encouraging a positive mindset through watching film helps create an optimistic atmosphere within the team, fostering confidence and motivation.

Video analysis has a wide range of benefits for swimmers looking to improve their skills and abilities. Don’t be afraid to ask your coach or one of your teammates to record your swims. Watching your race back can be fun, and a valuable learning experience.
