Tech Tuesday: How Fins Can Be Used as a Beneficial Training Tool and to Promote Feel at Enhanced Speeds
Through our Coaches Corner segment, Swimming World offers its audience the chance to hear from various coaches from around the country. As this new series establishes itself, coach Andrew Sheaff has provided his input on several training approaches designed to improve a specific skill. In this week’s video, Sheaff takes time to discuss the use of fins to enhance speed and arm propulsion. The video also serves as our Tech Tuesday.
In the video, which can be found here and below, Sheaff notes that the use of fins enables swimmers to move through the water faster. Consequently, this increase in speed encourages swimmers to gain a better feel for the water and the required pressure of the stroke. More, Sheaff emphasizes how fins allow swimmers to gain a feel for swimming fast without full exertion. This speed calls on swimmers to focus on their technique and how they interact with the water.
Sheaff further discusses how fins can provide flexibility in practice sets, and in guiding swimmers through certain training approaches – such as working on stroke count.
