Taylor Swift Show Gives U.S. Women’s Water Polo a Sneak Peek of Paris Olympics Venue

What happens when you put Paris, the U.S. national women’s water polo team and mega pop superstar Taylor Swift together? A night to remember for all and perhaps a precursor to what may be Olympic history.

Earlier this week the Americans played a friendly against the French at their new Olympic Aquatic Center, built for the Paris 2024 Olympics. A tuneup to the upcoming Games, the match saw the three-time defending Olympic champions beat the hosts by a score of 12-6. Striker Jenna Flynn delivered four goals and Team USA scored on 8 of 11 opportunities with the man advantage.

If what the Americans and Head Coach Adam Krikorian hope holds true, Monday’s match is a warmup for an historic run in the City of Lights for one of the most decorated polo programs in history. The U.S. is seeking a fourth straight Olympic title; they and the legendary Hungarian men’s program from 2000–2008 are the only polo programs to capture three consecutive golds.

To complete their excellent adventure in Paris, Krikorian surprised his players with a surreal bonus excursion: tickets Friday night for Swift’s Eras Tour, playing for four dates at La Defense Arena—which it just so happens will host the medal matches for men’s and women’s water polo at the Paris Olympics.

La Defense stands out as one of Europe’s premier indoor arenas, with as many as 40,000 seats for concerts—why Swift and her tour are playing there. The Eras tour is the last event before the Paris Olympic Committee takes control of the arena and swaps in Myrtha competition-ready pools for the stages where some of the world’s most famous acts have performed.

And, for one night, Krikorian, his players and his staff watched in awe of Swift, one of the world’s most admired and successful pop stars, in the same venue where the Americans plan to bring down the house in their own pursuit of immortality—of the Olympic sort.
