Taylor Ruck Returning to Stanford for One More Year

Two-time Canadian Olympian Taylor Ruck returned to Stanford this year after a two-year absence to prepare for the Olympics, and after a successful NCAA season that saw her win an individual national title in the 200-yard freestyle, Ruck has revealed she plans to return to Palo Alto for one more year in 2022-23. Ruck was listed as a redshirt junior on this year’s roster, and in an Instagram post, she revealed that she celebrated Stanford’s graduation this past weekend with the teammates she enrolled with in the fall of 2018.

Ruck came to Stanford as already a two-time Olympic relay medalist, and she had just competed in the Pan Pacific Championships where she won four medals, including gold ahead of Rikako Ikee and Katie Ledecky in the 200 freestyle. Ruck would earn two second-place finishes and a third-place result at her first NCAA Championships as the Cardinal captured a third consecutive national championship, but after the year, she moved to Toronto to train at Swimming Canada’s High Performance Center in Toronto to prepare for the Olympics. She ended up staying for two years after the COVID-19 pandemic forced the delay of the Tokyo Games.

Ruck ended up winning two more medals in Tokyo on relays, and she was an individual finalist in the 200 backstroke, but she finished off her best times and was not selected for the finals squad in any relays. But Ruck excelled in her return to college racing, and she qualified to represent Canada at this week’s World Championships in Budapest, where she will race the 200 free, 100 back and 200 back plus relays.
