In a minor upset, Canada’s Taylor Ruck out-touched the World Record holder in the 100 free with a 53.37 to Sjostrom’s 53.43. This is Sjostrom’s second swim of the session as she earlier won the 100 fly with a 56.62.
Ruck is a Stanford commit and Sjostrom is Swimming World’s swimmer of the year. She will be honored March 3 in Fort Lauderdale as she will leave the Atlanta Pro Swim Series early.
Mallory Comerford finished in third at 54.06 as she out-touched Margo Geer (54.20).
Federica Pellegrini (54.26), Lia Neal (54.53), Kayla Sanchez (54.68) and Rebecca Smith (54.98) also swam in the A-final.

Whoa!
Greatest upset in 2018 thus far?
The new face of Canadian swimming. Oleksiak is done.
If you take away Rio, Oleksiak has had a solid junior career. Getting to two WC finals at 17 is a feat in itself, especially considering women’s sprinting is at its highest level in a long, long time. I wouldn’t say “done” based off of some meet in March.
Three finals at the WC last year, the only teenager in both the 100m freestyle (fastest women’s 100m freestyle final in history by average time), winning 3 individual silvers at the 2015 world juniors 6 weeks after breaking her elbow, and winning 10 medals in senior international events (3 of them gold) within a year of her Olympic debut.
And she tends to swim a lot faster in major events than she does in smaller events. We don’t have enough information on Taylor Ruck’s performance in major events to even make that comparison.

Impressive
Congrats, Taylor!???
