American swimmer Tate Jackson was given a one-month doping suspension for testing positive for a THC metabolite.

The United States Anti-Doping Association announced the suspension Thursday. It levied the minimum suspension allowable, which is retroactive to March 25, meaning it has already expired as of the announcement. Thus, Jackson can participate at U.S. Olympic Trials.

Jackson tested above the allowable limit for 11-nor-9-carboxy-tetrahydrocannabinol (Carboxy-THC) in a urine test at the TYR Pro Swim Series on March 4. The chemical is a metabolic marker of banned cannabinoid substances such as cannabis, marijuana and hashish.

Jackson benefits from a change in doping police, which USADA references. The World-Anti Doping Code, for 2021, parted out “substances of abuse” into a separate category. THC is in that section, given its widespread (and in some areas, legal) recreational use and its lack of effect on performance. WADA’s guidance allows a three-month ban that can be reduced to one month after a rehabilitation plan. USADA said that Jackson “completed a counseling program regarding his use of cannabis.”

Jackson, 24, was a two-time NCAA champion at the University of Texas. He trains at Longhorn Aquatics. Jackson won three medals, including silver in the 100 free, at the 2019 World University Games, and competed in the International Swimming League with the champion Cali Condors. His competitive results between March 4 and the start of his suspension have been nullified.
