Swimming World Magazine, as part of a longstanding tradition, is seeking a gifted group of writers and social-media content creators for the 2024-25 school year who are interested in enhancing their journalism and social media skills, while building valuable experience to add to their resumes. Our successful internship programs have connected interns with jobs in related fields across the country.
This internship operates remotely, and there is considerable flexibility to meet the needs (school schedules, practice, etc.) of interested contributors. Communication is conducted primarily through email and Slack.
If you are a college student who is interested in a career in journalism, communications, marketing, social media, business, sports, public relations, blogging, writing, web content writing, or if you want to be an entrepreneur… YOU SHOULD APPLY! We are seeking interns from all areas of aquatic sports – swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open water swimming.
Journalism Intern Program
Our journalism interns will learn the ropes from our senior writers by assisting them with a variety of journalism projects. Their work will be valuable as Swimming World continues to offers its readership news, commentary, analysis, features and more. As an intern, you will learn a range of journalism skills such as:
- Gathering information and research (and learning about aquatic sports in the process)
- Prioritizing and understanding how you fit into a news desk and wider news operation
- How to write a news story
- How to write a feature
- Writing for digital media
- Understanding media law
- Legal and ethical considerations
- Using social media in journalism
- Technology tools for journalists
A large percentage of Swimming World’s most-read online content has been written by our stellar interns. Our cohort of interns significantly improves our ability to cover aquatic sports and events, and engages the worldwide community of athletes, coaches, fans, and enthusiasts.
Social Media Intern Program
Social media is a widely relied upon source for news, entertainment, and connection for people all over the world. At Swimming World, we use social media as a way to extend the reach of our news stories and to engage the aquatics community. We also use it to provide stories about people in the aquatics realm, share photos and videos of events, re-share fun-filled content, give inspiration for athletes at all levels, celebrate the heroes of aquatic sports, and much more.
As a social media intern you will learn about:
- Social strategy and planning
- Guidelines and ethics for using social media on a professional level
- Working with influencers and brands
- Creating original content
- Using a variety of technology platforms
- Attention to detail
The Journalism Application Process
If you or someone you know – athlete, team manager, grad assistant, etc. – is interested in gaining exposure and journalism experience this school year, please submit the following to John Lohn at lohn@swimmingworld.com
- A brief bio including name, school, conference, major and class.
- A brief letter about how this internship will contribute to your professional goals and what you hope to gain through the program.
- An aquatics-related writing sample. This may be an analysis piece, a feature story, or a training-specific article. Be sure to edit your story thoroughly. Look through our website to see examples of our intern stories!
- *Please aim for between 600 and 800 words and abide by Associated Press Style rules.
- Applications are due Monday, August 26.
*Applicants will be notified of their selection by Friday, August 30. Selected applicants will begin their internship on Monday, September 9, 2024. The internship will conclude Friday, April 18, 2025.
Social Media Application Process
If you or someone you know – athlete, team manager, grad assistant, etc. – is interested in gaining exposure to social media this school year, please submit the following to John Lohn at lohn@swimmingworld.com
- A brief bio including name, school, conference, major and class.
- A brief letter about how this internship will contribute to your professional goals and what you hope to gain through the program.
- Screenshots, written work, or links to previous work in social media. This does not have to be aquatics related, as personal accounts are acceptable.
- Graphic design experience is a plus!
- Applications are due Monday, August 26.
*Applicants will be notified of their selection by Friday, August 30. Selected applicants will begin their internship on Monday, September 9, 2024. The internship will conclude Friday, April 18, 2025.
