Swimming & Para Swimming Among 10 Sports At 2026 Commonwealth Games: Diving Misses Out
Swimming and para swimming have been confirmed among 10 sports to be contested at the 2026 Commonwealth Games although diving will not be on the scaled-down programme in Glasgow.
The programme also includes athletics and para athletics, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para bowls, and 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
Tollcross International Swimming Centre will host the swimming and para swimming, 12 years after the venue staged the 2014 Games with the 2018 European Championships and 2019 short-course Europeans subsequently held there.
Scotstoun Stadium Emirates Arena – including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) will also stage competition.
Diving – which was held at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh in 2014 – is one of a number of sports previously contested at the Games to miss out.
It has been included on the programme since the Empire Games in 1930 with the likes of Tom Daley, Jack Laugher, Alexandre Despatie, Matthew Mitcham, Jennifer Abel, Loudy Tourky and Melissa Wu all treading the Commonwealth boards.
Also not included are badminton, squash, table tennis, hockey, rugby 7s, triathlon, para triathlon, archery, rhythmic gymnastics, T20 cricket, beach volleyball, cycling (road and mountain biking), shooting and wrestling are also not included.
Golf, coastal rowing and BMX had been set to be included for the first time at Victoria 2026, before the Victorian State Government (AUS) withdrew as hosts earlier this year.
Glasgow were named hosts in September following a multi-million-dollar injection of funds negotiated by Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA).
Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Katie Sadleir NZOM said: ‘’On behalf of the entire Commonwealth Sport Movement, we are delighted to officially confirm that the 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in the host city of Glasgow. The Games promise to be a truly immersive festival of sport and celebration of culture and diversity that inspires athletes and sports – with a fan experience more accessible than ever before.
‘’With the Commonwealth Games held in such high esteem by athletes, sports and nations across the Commonwealth, we have been working tirelessly with our fellow stakeholders to ensure a high-quality Games will take place in 2026 – securing this vital milestone in the career pathway for thousands of athletes.
‘’The 2026 Games will be a bridge to the Commonwealth Games of tomorrow – an exciting first step in our journey to reset and redefine the Games as a truly collaborative, flexible and sustainable model for the future that minimises costs, reduces the environmental footprint, and enhances social impact – in doing so increasing the scope of countries capable of hosting.
‘’With the reassuring legacy of Glasgow 2014 providing existing sporting, transport and accommodation infrastructure, and world-class venues and expertise, we look forward to working with the Glasgow team to deliver a very special Commonwealth Games in 2026.
‘’Our Movement’s commitment to sport for development and social change remains central to Glasgow 2026 and beyond – with full integration of Para sport a priority the Games will continue to be an inspiring and impactful platform.’’
That’s quite sad and surprising for diving as Commonwealth nations are actually quite strong in diving on the international stage namely England Canada Australia and Malaysia .. even Jamaica has a decent diver at the moment
