Swimming Canada to Join USA Swimming’s 2025 Open Water Nationals

Swimming Canada will partner with USA Swimming to use the latter’s 2025 Open Water Nationals to select its national team for the 2025 World Championships.

The event will take place April 4-6 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. It’s the annual championships that the U.S. uses for its national team selections, which will include the delegation for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships that start in July in Singapore.

Canada will partner to use the same meet as its selection event while offering its swimmers a unique racing opportunity.

Swimming Canada had previously traveled to Grand Cayman Island to host Open Water Swimming Trials.

“Swimming Canada extends its heartfelt thanks to our partners with the Cayman Islands Aquatic Sports Association for their support of the open water program over the years,” Swimming Canada Acting CEO Suzanne Paulins said in a press release. “We are grateful to the Cayman Islands for their incredible hospitality in hosting our trials in the past. Their contribution has played a key role in the development of our open water athletes.”

Swimming Canada will still offer its Open Water Swimming Festival after Worlds, on Aug. 16-17 at the Montreal Olympic Basin.

Canada qualified one swimmer, Emma Finlin on the women’s side, for the marathon swim at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The World Championships includes Olympic distance of 10 kilometers and the 5-km swim.
