Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom uncorked a 56.72 this morning in the women’s 100-meter fly at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series Austin.

That would have been the seventh-ranked time in the world last year if not for her stunning world record 55.64 from the 2015 World Championships last summer.

Sjostrom is playing for keeps here in Austin as the highest-profile Arena swimmer here at the company’s crown jewel series.  Look for Sjostrom to put up another sizzler during finals tonight.

California’s Dana Vollmer, the only other swimmer ever to break 56 seconds in the event with a 55.98 from the 2012 London Olympics, qualified second in 57.62.  That would have ranked her in the top 10 last year.

California’s Noemie Thomas qualified third in 58.70 with Texas A&M’s Sarah Gibson earning fourth in 59.05.

California’s Kelly Naze (59.35), Stanford’s Felicia Lee (59.79), SoFlo’s Claire Donahue (59.89) and California’s Farida Osman (59.97) made up the rest of the top eight headed to the A final.
