FINA World Swimming Championships

Gwangju 2019

Day Three Finals (Men’s 200 Free)

In a severe turn of events in the pool on Tuesday night at the 2019 FINA World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, China’s Sun Yang won the 200 free final with a 1:44.93. Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys, who originally touched first at 1:44.69 was disqualified for a false start. The DQ became official immediately after the race for movement on the blocks.

The large contingent of fans from China on the lane 8 side of the pool screamed and shouted in delight when the official results were flashed on the scoreboard, with the rest of the pool jeering and booing the outcome.

Sun has been the talk of the venue in Gwangju this week after his controversial past with doping. The controversy came to a forefront when Australia’s Mack Horton lodged a silent protest in the medal ceremony of the 400 free on Sunday night, much to the delight of majority of the athletes competing.

Had Rapsys’ win counted, it would have been the first medal of his career at the World Championships. He would have moved up to eighth all-time.

This is Sun’s third straight medal in this event at the World Championships and he also defends his gold from 2017. He Joins Michael Phelps (2005, 2007), Ian Thorpe (2001, 2003) and Michael Gross (1982, 1986) as repeat winners at Worlds. He also joins Thorpe as winners of the 200 & 400 free in back-to-back World Championships.

“My victory was because of my hard work,” Sun said after the race. “I continued to keep fighting, I didn’t give up when I was in second place.”

“I was the only one to enter the 800 this morning, so I was very tired. I just slept for an hour and a half this afternoon.”

The silver medal went to Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto at 1:45.22. It was his first individual medal in his career and the first one for Japan at the World Championships. Russia’s Martin Malyutin and Great Britian’s Duncan Scott each picked up the bronze medal at 1:45.63. It is the first medal for either swimmer at the World Championships in an individual event.

“I guess I’ve sort of got to celebrate off someone else’s misfortune,” Scott said after the race. “I’d liked to have done it outright but it’s my first ever individual worlds medal so I have got to be happy with that and try and move things on in the rest of the week because I’ve still got more events to come.”

“To be perfectly honest I’ve definitely got more in there time wise. I have done a lot of 1:45s and I’ve swum them a lot of different ways as well. Learning but then I’m just disappointed I wasn’t able to go in there and get a best time. It’s two years now and I’ve not really moved it on timewise. It’s good that I am now consistent and I have been consistently dropping 1:45s at major meets which is good but it’s now trying to move that on as well.”

Early leader Clyde Lewis of Australia finished in sixth at 1:45.78. He was leading the race through 150 meters but fell off big time on the final lap. He had a meteoric rise last night in the semifinals, swimming a huge best of 1:44.90 to move him up to 10th all-time.

1 SUN Yang People's Republic of China CHN 1:44.93
2 MATSUMOTO Katsuhiro Japan JPN 1:45.22
3 MALYUTIN Martin Russian Federation RUS 1:45.63
3 SCOTT Duncan Great Britain GBR 1:45.63
5 MEGLI Filippo Italy ITA 1:45.67
6 LEWIS Clyde Australia AUS 1:45.78
7 KOZMA Dominik Hungary HUN 1:45.90
RAPSYS Danas Lithuania LTU DSQ

More controversy came about during the medal ceremony when Scott refused to take a photo with the medalists, shaking hands with Malyutin and Matsumoto, but refusing to make eye contact with Sun. Scott then took a photo with his medal alone but not with the other three medalists. He walked off after the ceremony was over and waved at the crowd. Sun eventually shouted at Scott, calling the Brit “a loser” and got in Scott’s face to make his feelings known.

“To be sure, Sun was banned from competition in 2014, but it was for only three months and for a proscribed substance, trimetazidine, that had been prescribed for angina, a heart condition. When Sun took the drug, it had been on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list for less than five months, and today is no longer recognized as a stimulant by doping agencies.”
Please do some research before you judge people.

And certainly no right to record him they could hv tempted with the results I would have done the same thing but till they find him guilty for this case?? All url doing is throwing around meaningless accusation Incase u haven’t noticed he’s swimming fast and not distracted

Matt Reinhardt if he was he would be banned and stripped off his medals? A medicine he took that was recently banned was a mistake he wasant aware of.. the vile his security guard broke was deemed iilegal and was done without proper clearence that they had enquired about before they destroyed it.. nothing wrong on Sun Yangs side. FINA verdict is… The blood that was initially collected (and subsequently destroyed) was not collected with proper authorisation and thus was not properly a “sample” … as a result, the sample collection session initiated by IDTM on September, 4, 2018, is invalid and void.

No FINA DC rule violations can result there from.
So basically he is clean and clear. A champion is determined by his titles not by conspiracy or what bad loosers and their supporters claim!

Shalvin Sharma every athlete is responsible for what they put in their body regardless of what they’re aware of, read the ASADA and WADA codes. How do you justify Sun smashing his own blood vials and continuously delaying tests for invalid reasons?? Sun is a weed in the sport not a champion

Shalvin Sharma

Reply to  Shalvin Sharma

Like the world body i don’t believe in conspiracy or allegations. If he is tested and found guilty he can go f**k himself. For now he is the champion and i respect him as a sportsman. He has his side of the story. Besides they always test him with proper authorization and there never has been a problem with that apart from the time it being done improperly. The time he was banned he was prescribed to take that medication by a doctor, the substance it had in it was back than just recently banned. Innocent untill his proven guilty.. thats how it is for grown up’s

Taff Jones beginning in 2014, when he served a three-month suspension after testing positive for trimetazidine. Being a recently banned substance during that period, a substance that he had obtained for a therapeutic use and was merely prescribed the medication for chest pain by a doctor. Before the ban on the substance, it was legal for use in swimming not so long ago and its just for heart stimulation. In the second case, an independent panel heard arguments from both sides and then ruled in his favor. Sun’s refusal to provide a sample did not violate antidoping rules, it said, because the collectors failed to provide the proper validation papers required to draw blood under the International Standard for Testing and Investigations. Appeal for a harsher sentence is pending to be heard in September by WADA, this will be a second hearing for the same case. I do believe that athletes are treading a very treacherous path if they are making allegations against other individuals that they cannot substantiate. FINA events are no place “to make personal statements or gestures.”

Because the drug test was illegally taken and that’s why he smashed the blood sample. FINA doping panel’s report, dated January 3, decided Sun did not commit a doping violation, hence his clearance to South Korea. Of course, some people would just ignore the fact and keep on believing what they want to believe.

Reply to  Tim Conley

Tim Conley its diffrent from steroids etc… what you’re trying to show is also done by protein supplements with maximum results. With trimetazidine enhancing performance, increasing muscle production and shortening recovery time can only be achieved to a minimal as its not a supplement but a medication and has a certain amount of dose that one can use. FYI The best known trimetazidine mechanism of action is its capacity to inhibit β-oxidation of free fatty acid (FFA) [1]. FFA oxidation provides more energy, but it is associated with increased oxygen consumption. When oxygen is in low supply, the oxidative processes of FFA and glucose are disrupted—paradoxically leading to an increased rate of FFA β-oxidation associated with even greater oxygen consumption—while glucose metabolism decreases, which results in lactate accumulation.
