Sun Yang Honored China Laureus Award for Year’s Best Male Athlete
China’s Sun Yang was named as the best male athlete of 2017 on the China Top Ten Benefitting Laureus Sport for Good award ceremony on Wednesday. This is Sun’s second China Laureus honor after taking the award in 2011.
Sun won the award alongside table tennis player Ding Ning who was the female recipient of the award.
“I’m pleased to win the trophy and I hope to express my gratitude to my family and my coach,” said Sun. “Representing all the other excellent athletes, I’d like to take the award as great encouragement. I need to start from zero every time when I walked out the podiums.”
Sun was the gold medalist in the 200 and 400 free at the World Championships in Budapest this year. Sun also won the award for the most popular male athlete of 2017 at the awards show.
Ding was the World Champion in the women’s singles and doubles at the World Championships in Dusseldorf this year.
15-year-old swimmer Li Bingjie was presented as the Rookie of the Year as she swam to bronze in the 400 and silver in the 800 free at the same Budapest World Championships. Li also broke the Asian Record in both events and anchored China to silver in the 4×200 free relay.
The Chinese national synchro team won the team of the year for their history-making performances at the World Championships where they won the gold medal in the combination team event.
