Sun Devil Open Will Feature Several Elite Performers From Bob Bowman-Training Group

Coming off several weeks of altitude training at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center, members of the Arizona State training group will headline this weekend’s Sun Devil Open. The three-day competition will run from Friday through Sunday and take place at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The meet will serve as a final tuneup before the United States Swimming International Team Trials, scheduled for later this month in Indianapolis.

Among those expected to compete are Regan Smith and Chase Kalisz, who will line up for the 200-meter individual medley during Friday’s action. It will be interested to see what Smith has in store in the 200 medley, since her personal best in the event (2:10.40) arrived just a few months after she shifted her training to Tempe and the direction of coach Bob Bowman. Meanwhile, Kalisz is seeded second in the 200 IM, with Hungarian teammate Hubert Kos listed as the top seed.

Simone Manuel and Olivia Smoliga will lead the field in the women’s 50 freestyle. Also entered in the meet is Olympic medalist Roland Schoeman, the 42-year-old who was recently selected to represent South Africa at this summer’s World Championships. Schoeman will match up in the 50 free with Ryan Held.

“Meanwhile, Kalisz is seeded second in the 200 IM, with Hungarian teammate listed as the top seed.”

I suspect you meant to include “Hubert Kos” after “Hungarian teammate”.

Also of interest, though I have no idea of her preparation level, is Hali Flickinger’s entry in the 400 free, 200 free and 200 fly. As far as I recall this is her first competition since returning from SCM Worlds in Australia in late 2022 where she won the 400 IM.
