Summer McIntosh, Joshua Liendo Set Stage For Big Night During Day Three Prelims At Canadian Trials
The opening two nights of the Canadian Trials for this summer’s World Championships were nothing short of spectacular, with Summer McIntosh unloading a world record in the 400-meter freestyle and Joshua Liendo registering a pair of national records in the 100 butterfly. Well, the third night of competition is shaping up to be stellar as well, thanks to McIntosh and Liendo again leading the way.
Coming off her world-record performance in the 400 freestyle, McIntosh cruised through the prelims of the 200 individual medley on Thursday morning, clocking a time of 2:11.28. Earlier this month, the 16-year-old set the Canadian record of 2:08.08, and given her form this week, something special could be on tap during the final. The world record sits at 2:06.12, established by Hungarian Katinka Hosszu in 2015.
Liendo followed up his 100 butterfly efforts by qualifying as the top seed in the 50 freestyle. Liendo touched the wall in 22.18 and figures to easily drop into 21-second territory during the evening session. Meanwhile, the women’s 50 freestyle was led by Hanna Henderson (25.49), but Maggie Mac Neil is lurking after easing through her morning swim in 25.79.
Maggie swam fly in the 50 free prelims.
