American David Plummer has been dealing with the aftereffects of a stomach ailment that he said played a role in his subpar swim in the 100 backstroke prelims at the FINA world championships.
Plummer, who won the silver medal in the event at the 2013 worlds, appeared out of sorts in the mixed zone as he talked about his 54.06 that ranked him 16th overall and barely into the semifinals.
“That second 50 just felt really weak this morning,” he said. “I’m hoping to find a little more pop tonight.”

The positive side of the swim, he said, was that he felt aggressive in the first 50 meters, splitting 25.84. He said he does want to have a faster opening split, which he believes will help him race the field in the closing stretch.
