LOS ANGELES, CA – Brian Heifferon scored a game-high four points, including the go-ahead penalty shot in the first overtime period, to lift the No. 2 Stanford men’s water polo team to an 11-10 victory over No. 1 USC in the championship game of the Southern California Tournament at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium on Sunday.
The Trojans (5-1) actually scored more goals than the Cardinal, 10-8, but Stanford (6-0) earned its winning margin by hitting three two-pointers. Heifferon’s two-pointer gave Stanford a 9-6 lead with 4:55 left in regulation, though USC stormed back with goals by Peter Janov, George Csaszar and Ivan Babic to send the game into overtime.
The final was a rematch of the 1998 NCAA championship game, which USC won in overtime.
