Stanford, Texas Battle for the Lead at the End of Day Two of NCAA Men’s Champs
By Phillip Whitten and Shelly Ripple
ATHENS, Georgia, March 29. A sixty-four point blitz in the 100 yard backstroke boosted Stanford into the lead at the end of the individual swimming events on Day Two at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, Georgia. But by the end of the day, Stanford had whittled only five points off the 20-point lead Texas boasted after the first day.
After Day Two, the score stood: Texas, 376; Stanford, 361.
Tomorrow will tell the tale. On paper, Stanford should have its best day tomorrow and take the title, but this is a crown that will be settled by two-hundredths of a second here, three-hundredths there.
200 yard medley relay
Stanford began the night with a thrilling win in the 200 yard medley relay, touching in 1:25.47 to Texas' 1:25.80. Minnesota was a close third at 1:25.87. Wisconsin, the surprise top qualifier, only went a tenth of a secon slower in the final, but dropped to seventh.
Stanford's Randall Ball led off with a 21.46 backstroke leg, well ahead of Texas' Tommy Hannan at 22.06. But Bal, the world champion in this event,
did not have the fastest split in this field. That honor went to Minnesota's Todd Smolinski, at 21.35. Cal' Alex Lim was second fastest at 21.41
Brendan Hansen brought the Horns to within 15-hundredths of a second of the Cardinal with his 23.96 breaststroke split, with Stanford's Michael Bruce going 24.37. Auburn's Pat Calhoun had the fastest breaststroke split at 23.78.
Ian Crocker is the American record-holder in the 100 fly, but Texas coach Eddie Reese was saving him for the anchor leg. Instead, Dan DiToro, who had swum the race of his life in the prelims of the 100 fly, had the task of swimming fly for the Horns. He responded with a 20.66, but Stanford's Matt McDonald was a little faster at 20.60.
That left it up to the anchors. Ian Crocker sprinted 19.16 for the Horns, but Peter Marshall, the workhorse for the Cardinal, responded with a 19.04 effort to cinch the win.
Cal's Anthony Ervin anchored in a cosmic 18.52 — fastest freestyle relay split in history.
400 yard Individual medley
The 400IM showcased a pair of well-known back-half swimmers fighting it out for the title. In the end, Erik Vendt, the Olympic silver medalist, came away with the victory in a time of 3:40.65. Rob Margalis, who was coming on strong with the fastest last 50 freestyle split of the night (24.34), finished a close second in a time of 3:41.42. Erik's and Rob's times rank them as the third and fourth fastest men in history.
Kevin Clements of Auburn finished third with a time of 4:43.19 while Markus Rogan of Stanford finished fourth with a 3:43.30.
Vendt split 52.01 for the fly, 55.67 for the back, 1:01.31 for the breast, and 51.66 for the free.
100 yard butterfly
In one of the most anticipated events of the evening, Ian Crocker met — and then surpassed — all expectations as he set a new American, US Open, NCAA, and pool record with a time of 45.44.
In a departure from his usual strategy, Crocker led from start to finish, spilting a 21.06 at the half way point. He also had the fastest second 50 split of the evening by half a second, 24.38.
Peter Marshall of Stanford finished second in a time of 46.48, a tenth off of his preliminary time. Roland Schoeman of Arizona, champion of the 50 free on Thursday night, touched the wall in third with a time of 46.50.
200 yard freestyle
In a stunning upset, Florida freshman Stephen Sioui stepped up and won the event in a time of 1:34.67. Dan Ketchum, a sophomore from Michigan who is rapidly improving, finished one tenth back in 1:34.76.
Klete Keller, the American record holder in the 400 meter freestyle and the champion last night in the 500 freestyle, finished a disappointing third with a time of 1:35.42.
Justifiably, Keller was furious with himself for his laid-back lackadaisical swim. And later, to paraphrase a well-known octogenarian news commentator, you will know "the rest of the story."
100 yard breaststroke
The long-awaited match-up between Brendan Hansen and Patrick Calhoun was an exciting one. Patrick took the race out in a blazing 24.39 50 split. But, he could not hold off Brendan the last 25 of the race. Brendan touched the wall first in a new pool record time of 52.47. Patrick touched second in 52.72. Brendan and Patrick were the only two sub-53 100 breaststrokes of the competition. Finishing third was junior Jeff Hackler from Minnesota in a time of 53.24.
100 yard backstroke
"Go Stanford!" was the overwhelming theme as the finalists in the 100 backstroke walked out of the ready room. Stanford, with four finalists, was out to prove it is the best backstroke school in the nation. Let there be no doubt! With all four men going under 47, Stanford can lay claim to the dorsal kings of the nation.
Although it was not his season's best performance, Stanford's Peter Marshall came away with the victory in a time of 45.91. Cal's Alex Lim posed a threat the last 25, but fell a touch short, finishing second with a personal best time of 46.05.
Randall Bal and Dan Westcott hit the pads in third and fourth place with times of 46.13 and 46.51. Jayme Cramer was sixth in 46.95.
3-meter springboard diving
Olympian Troy Dumais was expected to win his second title of the meet and that is exactly what he did. Troy won the 3 meter event with 673.80 points. In a close battle for second, senior Imre Lengyle from Miami came out ahead with 624.30 points. Phil Jones, a freshman from Tennessee, finished third with 623.15 points. Troys brother, Justin Dumais, who is also a senior at Texas, was fourth in the competition with 620.05 points.
800 yard freestyle relay
The smart money was on USC. No question about it, the Trojans were favored to win the day's final event, the 800 freestyle relay.
But not like this. Not with an NCAA and US Open record. And not with the fastest 200 yard freestyle relay split in history.
But that's exactly what happened. Word!
Jeff Lee led off for the Trojans with a lifetime best 1:35.30, a time that would hve placed him third in the 200. Texas' Chris Kemp, who won the consols in 1:34.41–faster than the winning time in the final, was right behind at 1:35.67.
Rodrigo Castro, USC's Brazilian import, followed with a 1:34.68 — two seconds better than Texas' Rainer Kendrick.
Like their namessakes of yore, the Trojans were relentless, as Tamas Kerekjarto added another second-and-a-half to the USC lead with his 1:35.22.
That set the stage for Klete Keller. Mad Klete Keller. Furious Klete Keller. The Klete Keller who would not abide another laid-back lackadaisical performance like his own 200 free an hour earlier.
USC could get the record. All Keller had to do was split 1:32.79. No one had ever gone that fast.
A determined Klete Keller went for it. In the 200, he had split 23.1 for his first 50. Now he blazed a 21.2 — albeit with a relay start.
He kept going, turning at 44.45 for the first 100, versus a 47.0 in his individual race. Could he keep up the pace?
Keller came storming home in 46.70 to split an astonishing 1:32.15 — easily the fastest 200 in history –and wrap up a brand new NCAA/US Open mark for his team: 6:17.35.
Asked afterwards if it hurt coming home, a beaming Klete simply said: "I don't know. I don't remember."
How did he do it? "He was angry at himself," explained chief Trojan cheerleader Lenny Krayzelburg. "Now he knows what he's capable of doing. We'll just have to get him mad before each race from now on."
…And now you know…the rest of the story.
