NEW COMMIT: Bates College has gained a new commitment for the fall of 2019 from Virginia Beach, Va. native Paul Southern.

Primarily a sprint freestyler, Southern does his club swimming with Tide Swimming and most recently competed at the Kecoughtan Invitational where he placed ninth in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 free. He recorded a lifetime best at Virginia Seniors last March and finaled in the 50m free at the 2017 Virginia LCM Senior Championships. Also competing for Norfolk Academy, Southern took tenth in the 100 free and 11th in the 50 free as a junior at the VISAA Championships after winning the former event at the 4A North Region meet.

He told Swimming World:

“I would like to announce my commitment to Bates College. I never dreamed that I would be accepted into a small college of such a high caliber. I am blessed and honored to be able to attend Bates College. Many thanks to my family, teammates, and coaches for their assistance and support. Go Bobcats!”

 His best times include:

  • 50 free – 21.97
  • 100 free – 48.42
  • 200 free – 1:51.49

When he suits up for the Bobcats as a member of the class of 2023, Southern will add his talents to a sprint group that includes Christopher Draper, Tanner Fuller and Pieter Cory. He would’ve scored in the C-final of the 50 free at the 2018 NESCAC Championships where Bates finished sixth overall in the team standings.
