Sprinter Josh Howat Commits to In-State Virginia
NEW COMMIT: The University of Virginia has received another impressive verbal commitment for its growing Class of 2029, this time from in-state sprinter Josh Howat Springfield, Virginia.
He will join Grant Murphy, Thomas Mercer, Maximus Williamson and Thomas Heilman in Charlottesville.
Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at University of Virginia. I want to thank all my teammates, coaches, and my family. I wouldn’t be here without them. Thank you to the staff at UVA for giving me this opportunity. GO HOOS!”
Howat trains year-round with the renowned Nations Capital Swim Club and earned bronze in the 50m free at NCSA Championships this past spring before going on to take fifth in that event at Eastern Zone super Sectionals earlier this month. Last summer, he placed fifth in the 50m free and sixth in the 100m free at Junior Nationals.
His best times include:
- 50 free – 19.92
- 100 free – 44.05
- 200 free – 1:38.15
Finishing up his junior year at Lake Braddock High School, Howat swept the 50 and 100 free at the Virginia Class 6A State Championships in 2023 and 2024. He finished sixth and fourth, respectively, in those events during his freshman season.
The Cavaliers finished fifth at the 2024 ACC Championships and 17th at the 2024 NCAA Championships.
