The Southern Zone South Sectional Meet got underway in Orlando, Florida this evening. Despite typically playing host to mostly Florida Swimming and Florida Gold Cost teams, many teams from outside the Southern Zone are present. (Mention teams). This meet has been known for cameos from very fast collegiate teams like Florida State University and University of Florida.

The women’s 1500-meter freestyle was the first event of the evening. 14 year-old Junseo Kim out of Scarlet Aquatics in NJ took the gold with a time of 17:05.77. She was followed closely by Marcella Rupert-Gomez out of Gulliver Swim Club who touched in 17:07.59. Rounding out the medal stand was Abigail Kilgallon from Scarlet Aquatics with a 17:10.84.

The men took their turn in the tank with the 800-meter freestyle. The top time was 8:22.62, turned in by Jackson Karofsky out of Scarlet Aquatics. Alfonso Mestre trailed Karofsky by less than a second, to earn the silver medal in a time of 8:23.54. Highlander’s Hayden Curley earned a bronze medal with his time of 8:26.45.

After the distance events, the sprint relays followed for both the men and women. In the women’s 200-meter medley relay Club Seminole dominated the field by winning by almost two full seconds, with the time of 1:53.96, while Gator Swim Club touched second in 1:55.87. Trinity Prep and Swim Florida battled it out for the bronze, with Trinity Prep ultimately touching in front, with a time of 1:57.95.

Club Seminole walked away with one more win tonight, in the men’s version of the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:42.88. Westminster Academy swam to a silver medal performance with a 1:46.07, followed closely by the Bolles School Sharks, who turned in a time of 1:47.23, to round out the podium.

The relay events continued with the always exciting mixed medley and mixed freestyle relays. Scarlet Aquatics picked up their first relay win of the meet in the mixed medley relay by turning in a time of 1:54.65, narrowing escaping the two men and women from East Coast Aquatic Club, who touched the wall in 1:55.09. Swim Florida grabbed the bronze with a swift 1:56.27.

Club Seminole walked out of the Orlando YMCA Aquatic Center with their third win of the night in the mixed 200-meter relay. The Seminoles cruised to a 1:39.60, in front of Gator Swim Club’s 1:41.11 while Trinity Prep touched right behind in 1:41.38, good enough for the bronze medal.

Tomorrow’s events include the 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly and the 400-meter IM, all for both the men and women.
