COLUMBIA, South Carolina, September 30. THE South Carolina Gamecocks received verbal commitments from two butterfly specialists today, as Katie Shannahan and Marissa Delgado announced that they’ll be a part of the swim team’s freshman class next fall.
Shannahan hails from Scottsdale, Ariz., where she represents Scottsdale Aquatic Club and Desert Mountain High School. She won two state high school titles last November in the 200 IM (2:04.25) and 100 butterfly (56.13) and is looking to repeat as Division 1 champion this November. The 200 IM swim is her lifetime best, but she lowered her 100 fly best time to 54.99 this past July in a special qualifying meet. She also has potential in the 200 fly with a lifetime best of 2:02.59.
Delgado comes from the storied Cincinnati Marlins swim team, where she celebrated a sub-2:00 swim in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCSA junior nationals last March with a 1:59.97. She placed ninth in the 100 fly at the Ohio state championships for Saint Ursula Academy with a 55.93.
