NEW COMMIT: Greenville, S.C. native Liam Walker has announced his verbal to move to West Lafayette, Indiana, and join the Purdue Boilermakers class of 2023.

Walker swims year round for Team Greenville, where he qualified for the Speedo Junior Nationals in the 100 butterfly, placing 65th at 56.59, slightly off his best time of 56.24. Walker also swam two time trials at Juniors this summer, where he swam best times of 24.23 in the 50 free and 2:09.88 in the 200 IM.

Walker is also coming off a strong final high school season where he was 3A state champion in South Carolina in both the 200 IM (1:53.42) and 100 fly (50.53). The 200 IM win was a little off his best time of 1:52.53 from the Speedo Champions Series in Greensboro in March, but his 100 fly was a best time.

Walker swims for St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville.

His best times include:

  • 100 fly – 50.53/56.24
  • 200 fly – 1:54.28/2:08.32
  • 200 IM – 1:52.53/2:09.88

Liam Walker is joining a strong Purdue team that is coming off of a fourth place finish at the 2018 Big Ten Championships. The Boilermakers are losing some key relay swimmers at the end of this season in Erik Juliusson and 100 back/100 fly school record holder Joe Young.

Walker will be a freshman in the fall of 2019 and will be looking to fill the void left behind by Juliusson in the sprint butterfly ranks. Walker’s times are not scoring material yet but could develop over time under head coach Dan Ross.

He told Swimming World:

“I decided to commit to Purdue because it had the best environment for me to grow as a student and an athlete. The team is amazing and has an outstanding coach. Not to mention, the school is known for stellar academics. This combination seemed like the best fit for me and that is why I chose to commit to Purdue. That is why I’m proud to say ‘Go Boilers!'”
