South Australian State Championships: Bronte Storms Home To Catch Cate As Campbell Girls Turn On Classic Sister Act In 100m Freestyle

Bronte Campbell has stormed home to out-touch sister Cate in a classic 100m freestyle shoot-out on the final night of the South Australian State Championships in Adelaide tonight.

It was 29-year-old Bronte in (53.30), who edged out 31-year-old Cate (53.41) as swimming’s “sisters of speed” plot their Olympic pathways to Paris – Bronte chasing a berth on her fourth team and Cate on a record fifth team.

Also leaving their marks at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre were defending Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Zac Stubblety-Cook (Chandler, QLD) who returned to competition to take out his specialist 200m breaststroke in 2:09.29 (1:03.25;1:06.04) and his club mate, triple Olympic backstroker Mitch Larkin who is steadily moving in the right direction as he builds towards the June Olympic Trials in Brisbane, winning the 1090m backstroke in 55.71.

The “Sister Act” have been at the forefront of swimming in Australia since Cate first emerged on the scene at the Sydney Youth Olympic Festival in 2007 – going on to win bronze in Beijing in 2008 – and joined by Bronte on the 2012 team to London.

The World Championship-winning Campbell sisters have since cemented their names in the annals of the sport – featuring in countless golden moments as Australia forged its way to the top of world freestyle sprinting – winning Olympic 4x100m freestyle relay gold in 2012 (Cate), 2016 (Bronte and Cate) and 2020 (Bronte and Cate).

Cate, the individual Olympic bronze medallist in the 50m freestyle(2008) and the 100m (2020) opened up what looked to be a commanding lead at the 50m, turning in 25.51 to Bronte’s 26.09- Bronte returning in 27.21 to Cate’s 27.90.

For the first time in their careers the Campbell girls will prepare for an Olympics in different programs – Cate in Brisbane under Dean Boxall’s former assistant Maxine Seear at the Chandler HP Hub while Bronte is under the direction of Olympic gold medal coach Shannon Rollason at the Swimming NSW ACT Performance Hub.
