South African Standout Pieter Coetze Analyzes Backstroke Rise on Social Kick Podcast
Although just 20 years old, South African Pieter Coetze is already a two-time Olympian, having competed at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021 and the recently completed Paris Games. Over the past few weeks, Coetze was busy in Asia, racing at all three stops of the World Cup series. Just after wrapping up his World Cup work, Coetze joined the Social Kick Podcast to discuss his career with hosts Luke Paddington and John Mullen.
During the hour-long interview, Coetze went into detail about his performances in World Cup competition, where he finished as the overall winner in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. His performances in the events earned Coetze $56,500, a nice little haul for a few weeks of work.
The South African star also reviewed his efforts at the Olympic Games in Paris, where he advanced to the finals of both backstroke events. In the 100 backstroke, Coetze posted a fifth-place finish while setting an African record of 52.58. In the 200 backstroke, Coetze touched the wall in seventh place, with his time of 1:55.60 good for another African mark.
With youth on his side, and his performances continually improving, Coetze figures to be a factor on the international backstroke scene for years ahead.
