Six HS State Records Taken down at New Jersey Meet of Champions
SEWELL, New Jersey, March 8. SIX state records were erased during the New Jersey High School Meet of Champions March 1-2 at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology.
Zach Molloy, a senior at Toms River North, was responsible for setting two of the marks. His 44.59 in the 100 free took down Jason Rosenbaum’s 1991 time of 45.76, and his 1:37.61 bettered Bobby Savulich’s 2005 mark of 1:38.30.
Montgomery senior Zack Warner, who is headed to Auburn in the fall, lowered the boys 100 breast mark to 54.89. The previous mark, set in 2011, was 55.66 by Nic Fink.
One of Lauren English’s 2007 standards fell, and another was seriously threatened. English’s 50 free time of 23.11 was taken down by Westfield senior Caroline Baldwin with her 23.00. The North Carolina-bound senior also captured the 100 back in 54.49, just 5-hundredths shy of English’s standard of 54.44.
Both 200 yard medley relay records were demolished as well. Baldwin led Westfield’s squad of sophomore Gwyn Devin plus seniors Erika Daniel and Sarah Cronin to a 1:45.59, bettering Montgomery’s 2009 mark of 1:46.90. Pingry’s 2011 mark of 1:34.36 fell to Bergen Catholic’s quartet of Joshua Sembrano (senior), Ralph Cannarozzi (junior), John Om (junior) and Liam Kelly (senior), who put together a 1:33.92.
Hillsborough High’s girls team claimed both freestyle relay events. The 200 free relay of Julieyanna Parker (sophomore), Deborah Stoddard (junior), Megan Ball (freshman) and Lindsay Temple (senior) combined for a 1:35.89. Sophomore Stephanie Mauer replaced Stoddard on the winning 400 free relay (3:30.14). Parker was the 100 fly champ, posting a 55.38, just ahead of Shawnee senior Julianna Foss’ 55.48.
Holly Christensen, a junior at Hunterdon Central, claimed the 100 free in 50.97. Saint Rose junior Casey Lawson’s 1:49.41 gave her the victory in the 200 free, with Ocean City freshman Amanda Nunan a close second with her 1:49.66. Nunan came back later in the meet to take first in the 500 free (4:51.93).
Meaghan O’Donnell from Wayne Valley earned her victory in the 200 IM by just 6-hundredths over Hillsborough’s Bull, 2:05.83 to 2:05.89. Montclair sophomore Charlotte O’Leary posted a 1:03.54 to gain first in the 100 breast.
The Vineland quartet of Mark Novatorskiy (junior), Johnny Malatesta (senior), Dominick Menghi (sophomore) and Eddie Parks (junior) swept the boys freestyle relay races with their 1:26.15 in the 200 free and 3:09.89 in the 400 free.
Moorestown’s Zachary Fong captured two individual event titles with his 4:33.03 in the 500 free and 49.70 in the 100 fly. Moorestown sophomore Alexander Martin also was a two-time winner with his 1:51.03 in the 200 IM and 49.71 in the 100 back. Marc Sambolin, a Montclair senior, splashed his way to a 20.62 triumph in the 50 free.
