Singapore National Record Holder Gan Ching Hwee Set to Join Hoosiers in Spring 2022

NEW COMMIT: Indiana University will welcome Gan Ching Hwee out of Singapore in spring 2022, as she has announced her verbal commitment to the Hoosiers.

She will overlap with Katharina WredMacKenna Lieske, Lily HannCat WatrousChiok Sze YeoKristina Paegle, Avery Spade, Gracie Olsen and Mya DeWitt who will arrive in Bloomington at the start of the 2022-23 season.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Indiana University to further my academic and swimming career! I chose IU because of the strong team culture and wonderful facilities for me to train and study. I’m also incredibly grateful for the support from my family, friends, and coaches. Can’t wait to be a part of this amazing team!! GO HOOSIERS!❤️?”

Hwee owns a pair of junior national records in the 800m free and 1500m free, the latter in which she also holds the standard at the senior national level.

She trains year-round with Swimfast Aquatic Club.

In LCM, her best times include:

  • 200 free – 2:01.88
  • 400 free – 4:16.42
  • 800 free – 8:42.23
  • 1500 free – 16:33.54

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 200 free – 1:46.91
  • 400 free – 4:47.30
  • 800 free – 9:45.13
  • 1500 free – 16:14.05

She represented Singapore at the 2019 World Championships, finishing 21st in the mile. Hwee also won the 400m free, 800m free, and 1500m free at the Singapore Olympic Qualifier in December 2020.

Under head coach Ray Looze, the Hoosiers finished third overall in the team standings at the 2021 Big Ten Championships.
