Silantiev Sizzles in Canet
CANET, FRANCE, May 27. THE hot French Riviera sun must agree with Ukraine's Denis Silantiev, who turned in a sizzling 1:56.25 to take the 200 meter butterfly today on the second day of competition of the Mare Nostrum meet in Canet, France. Silantiev easily disposed of Australia's Greg Shaw, whose 1:58.28 was fast in its own right.
Australia's Grant McGregor, who just missed making the Australian Olympic team, walloped the opposition to win the 400m IM by six seconds, touching in 4:17.37.
Russian veteran Andrei Ivanov took the 200m breaststroke in 2:14.29, his best time this year while his compatriot, Alex Popov, out-touched Algeria's Salim Iles in the 100m free, 50.02 to 50.04.
Denmark's Mette Jacobsen improved on her best time this season to win the women's 200m fly in 2:08.12 by four seconds. But the prize for the largest margin of victory went to Ukrainian IMer Yana Klochkova, whose 4:41.06 for the 400 meter medley was more than 11 secons faster than the rest of the field.
In a very close race, Romania's Camelia Potec out-touched Russia's Nadezhda Chemezova 4:11.17 to 4:11.28 to win the 400m freestyle.
