Siena Turns to Alumna Maggie Davenport as Women’s Head Coach

Siena College has hired 2019 graduate Maggie Davenport as the women’s swimming and diving program’s head coach.

Davenport is the seventh coach in program history. She was a team captain in her time in Loudonville before a coaching career that included two seasons as an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s teams at Union College.

“I could not be more excited to be returning home to Siena College,” Davenport said in a university statement. “I would like to thank John D’Argenio, Andrew Santandera, and the hiring committee for trusting in me and giving me this opportunity. Siena is a very special place and this is a very special team. I’m looking forward to working with this incredible group of student athletes as we build on the strong foundation of the Siena Women’s Swimming and Diving program.”

Davenport was hired to replace Brogan Barr, who left in June to take an assistant coaching position at LSU.

Davenport, 27, helped Union achieve four school records, three NCAA B cuts and 16 program top-10 times over the last two seasons. The men’s team last year started 4-0 in dual meets for the first time since 1966.

Davenport spent the 2021-22 season as an assistant at SUNY New Paltz. She spent two years as the head coach of the Schenectady Saratoga Sharks Swim Club.

Davenport received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Siena in 2019, then a master’s in kinesiology from Southeastern University in 2022. A captain as a senior, she anchored relays that contributed to the Saints’ first ECAC Championship in 2015.

“We’re excited to welcome Maggie home to lead our Siena Women’s Swimming and Diving program,” Vice President and Director of Athletics John D’Argenio said. “She’s proven to be a rising young coach in the profession who has been mentored by Siena Hall of Famer Molly Chamberlain ‘11, HOF ‘23.”
