Shackell Siblings – Alex and Aaron – Shining at Speedo Sectionals in Indianapolis

The Shackell siblings – Alex and Aaron – are using the weekend to put together some impressive performances in the long-course pool. Racing at Speedo Sectionals in Indianapolis, the sister-brother duo has produced several quick times in what can be considered a tuneup meet on the way to the United States Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.

In Friday action, Alex Shackell clocked 57.58 to claim victory in the 100-meter butterfly. That swim complemented an effort of 1:59.84 in the prelims of the 200 freestyle. Shackell opted to scratch the final of the freestyle and place her focus on the butterfly. The Cal recruit was also the runnerup in the 50 freestyle on Thursday, going 25.24. The event was won by Julie Mishler in 25.07.

While his sister excelled in her events, Aaron Shackell made his own noise. In the 200 freestyle, the 19-year-old touched the wall in 1:46.35, a superb mark for this point in the season. After beginning the 2023-24 campaign at Cal, Shackell is back training with Carmel Swim Club ahead of Trials.

Shackell figures to be a contender for an Olympic bid in the 200 freestyle, where the top-six finishers are eligible to earn trips to Paris for the Olympic Games as 800 freestyle relay members.

During Thursday night’s session, Team USA veteran and two-time Olympian Lilly King won the 200 breaststroke in a tight duel with Kotryna Teterevkova. King covered her four laps in 2:23.27, with Teterevkova right behind in 2:23.35.
