Service in Swimming: Ways to Give Back to the Sport that Provides So Much
In a sport where intensity, routine, and energy are always in demand, it’s important to take a step back and look at the grand scheme of things. Often times, we become so wrapped up in our everyday lives that we tend to forget the potential impact we can make on others, big or small. At surface level, all sports have a tendency to come off as brash, where it seems as if everyone is in it for themselves. But, with an open mind and determination for change, you, your teammates, coaches, parents, and whomever else can greatly provide and serve others around you in many ways.
Think of a time when you have been graciously surprised or received help for something. Maybe it was completely out of the blue, or maybe it’s something you desired and looked forward to. There are so many people and organizations that yearn for that same feeling, and it’s important as athletes to not only grow and recognize our talents in the water, but become as genuine members of society as well. For most people, swimming does not last a lifetime, so finding ways to give back through sport is extremely beneficial for future practice beyond the pool. Here are easy ways you and your team can give back to your community members.
1. Write Letters
This team project is so simple, yet means so much to those who receive these special messages. Taking the time to hand write and decorate notes showing your appreciation is a great way to show you care and you see what others are doing for you. It’s always a warm and welcome gift, and one that is easily transferrable to those you desire to reach out to. If you’re unsure where to start, the hustle and bustle of swimming is very demanding, requiring hours of behind the scenes work from dozens of volunteers. Start by writing to your favorite meet official or coach.
2. Choose a Cause
With so many wonderful organizations in your local community, sponsoring one is a no brainer. When you have events such as competitions or team gatherings, bring your chosen organization to life and do something for them, such as raise money or goods, or spread awareness by taking a moment to publicly recognize them.
3. Annual Traditions
Speaking from personal experience, creating an annual tradition with your teammates is a great way to establish tradition on the team and give back to those who need it. In my club swimming career, as a team, we would make Thanksgiving meals for members of the community every year in connection with our local county social services. As privileged as many are in the swimming community, it’s always great to roll up your sleeves and dedicate some time to serving others.
4. Food, Coat, or Toy Drive
Similar to choosing an organization to donate to, supply drives are a great way to show support in your community. Teams of all sizes can make a big difference when everyone rallies together and contributes to a great cause. This is also financially savvy as supply drives rely on slightly used products from your own home or cheap canned goods and/or non-perishables.
5. Team Competitions
What better way to raise money or supplies for a group of people than to create a competitive atmosphere for all to participate in? Athletes have an inner drive to be the best and there is always a way to bring that spirit into service. Great examples of this are events such as “Penny Wars” or competing for a coach to do something embarrassing as a result of the compeition. Of course, it’s important to remember while it’s all fun and games, there are people on the other side of it that will greatly benefit from it. So, in the end, everyone wins!
6. Host Swim Clinics
In communities across the world, swimming is fun for people of all ages. Whether it be for recreation or competition, there is always a need for aquatic instruction. With the help of your team’s adult volunteers, directors, and coaches, host fun and educational swim clinics for members of your community. Having swimmers teach other swimmers will open many doors to enhanced leadership skills and a sense of security in the world of swimming.
Remember, there is always something you can do to give back to others, even in small ways. While there are a plethora of other ways to impact your community, take these as stepping stones to something greater. Be creative in your service and think outside of the box. There is no right or wrong when it comes to the well-being of other people. Community service is great because there is no need to bring a bunch of pressure or stress onto yourself when organizing events. It’s all about helping others and developing a passion and commitment to those who may not be as fortunate.
