SEC Championships, Night 5: Florida Sets Conference Record in 400 Free Relay to Cap Team Sweep
Florida didn’t just repeat as both the men’s and women’s champions at the SEC Championships Saturday night. They capped the meet in emphatic fashion, the women’s 400 free relay setting a conference record and the men downing the meet record.
The women’s squad went 3:08.00 to lop a second off the record that had stood since 2017. It took Florida to 1,391.5 points, 200 clear of Tennessee for the Gators’ second straight title and 19th overall.
It’s 12 in a row for the men and 45 total crowns. They picked up three individual win on the day and blasted a meet record in the 400 free relay to accrue 1,584 points, a stunning 480 more than the runner-up.
Florida also took home two pieces of individual hardware. Bella Sims was awarded the women’s SEC Commissioner’s Trophy with 96 points, the top scorer on the women’s side. The Gators’ Josh Liendo split the men’s award with Baylor Nelson of Texas A&M, each scoring 91 points.

Women’s 1,650 freestyle
Georgia’s Abby McCulloh breezed to the victory in 15:40.96. She denied Emma Weyant of Florida a third individual title, though the winning margin of more than 13 seconds indicated that it was never really in doubt. McCulloh, a junior, is the only A cut of the bunch. She was just 2 seconds off the pool record of Stephanie Peacock from 2012 and 4.4 off Brittany MacLean’s meet mark from 2016.
Weyant was nearly eight seconds up on Hayden Miller of Texas A&M, who garnered bronze. She had been fifth in 2023, a spot behind McCulloh. Aly Breslin, last year’s runner-up, was fourth in 16:03.92. Liberty Williams followed.

In a race straight out of the training pool, Florida freshman Andrew Taylor held off his fellow Gator Giovanni Lindscheer to get gold. Taylor went 14:38.41. Lindscheer, a sophomore, whittled all by the last .37 seconds out of that, closing in 25.13. He was 2.5 seconds back as they turned for the final 100 yards.
Third was Levi Sandidge of Kentucky, who scored the surprise victory in this event last year. He went 14:44.24. Teammate Carson Hick was fifth, behind Auburn’s Mason Mathias, fourth for the second straight year. Jake Mitchell and Oskar Lindholm added top-seven finishes for the Gators.

Marshall went out in 46.08, by which point the race was all but over. Reigning champion Bradley Dunham clocked in at 1:37.80, good for an A cut and a silver medal. Aidan Stoffle grabbed the hosts a medal in 1:38.78, the third NCAA A cut. His brother Nathaniel Stoffle was fifth. Aidan was fourth and Nathaniel seventh last year. Women’s 200 breaststroke
It’s a double breaststroke double for Mona McSharry, another one who is getting monstrously faster. Last year, she won the event in 2:05.11. This year, she did away with the 2:04s altogether, the Irish star going 2:03.84. That trounces Sydney Pickrem’s SEC meet record of 2:04.62 from 2016, as well as Caitlin Leverenz’s pool mark of 2:04.76 from 2012. It puts Bethany Galat’s conference record of 2:03.26 possibly in play for NCAAs.
Second, as she was in the 100 breast, was Tennessee teammate Emilie Fast, this time going 2:07.02. It again relegated Georgia’s Zoie Hartman to bronze in 2:07.26. She had won silver last year. Alessia Ferraguti was also in the 2:07s for fourth. Avery Wiseman, last year’s bronze medalist, finished fifth in 2:08.45 for Alabama.

Men’s 200 breaststroke
Alex Sanchez knew the reigning champ, Aleksas Savickas, wasn’t going to give up his gold lightly.
Sanchez lowered the pool record he set in the morning to 1:50.36. That was just enough to rally past Savickas, the 100 breast champ, by .06 seconds. The Florida sophomore, whose 2023 meet record survived, was up by .73 seconds as they field turned for home. But Sanchez roared home in 28.70 seconds to clip the gold in an event in which he finished eighth last year.
Baylor Nelson added a third medal with bronze in 1:52.43. Teammate Vincent Ribeiro was fourth for the Aggies.

Montserrat Gutierrez Lavenant edged Camyla Monroy out for gold in the women’s 3-meter event. Monroy got her revenge Saturday.
The Florida freshman scored 312.70 points to deny the LSU grad student a repeat on platform. Monroy was first after prelims, as well, with Gutierrez Lavenant just edging into the final in seventh, by less than six points.
Gutierrez Lavenant scored 304.80 points for silver. Auburn grad student Ashlynn Sullivan was a distant third in 273.85. It means Tennessee’s Tanesha Lucoe is fourth for a second straight year.

Women’s 400 freestyle relay
Florida was stung to be beaten by LSU in this relay last year. But Bella Sims and Isabel Ivey had no intention of a repeat of that.
Ivey seized the lead with a split of 46.61 off the front, and the Gators never looked back to win in 3:08.00, an SEC record. It downs the time set in 2017 by Georgia (3:08.97) and erased the 2020 of Auburn that stood as the meet and pool record. Sims split 46.54, and Micayla Cronk brought it home in 46.42. Only Lainy Kruger on the fourth leg was over 47.
Tennessee hit the existing SEC mark exactly, with Brooklyn Douthwright, Mona McSharry, Josephine Fuller and Camille Spink going 3:08.97. Spink’s 46.08 punctuated it.
Georgia is headed back to NCAAs with an A cut of 3:12.12, .05 ahead of another strong LSU performance. Auburn was just .02 outside the auto standard for fourth.

Men’s 400 freestyle relay
Tennessee denied Florida a relay title to end last year’s meet, an indignity the Gators rectified at NCAAs with a national record. This time around, Florida put it right to start out with. Josh Liendo outfoxed Gui Caribe on the opening leg, then Adam Chaney, Julian Smith and Macguire McDuff powered the Gators home in 2:45.31. It’s a meet record, downing the super-suited 2:46.03 that Auburn set in 2009.
The balance is impressive on the Gators, with all four splits between Liendo’s 41.13 and the 41.57 of McDuff.
Caribe joined Nikoli Blackmon, Micah Chambers and Jordan Crooks’ 40.57 anchor to go 2:46.11. That’s an A cut, as is Alabama’s bronze-medal 2:48.61. The Tide got there by .01 over Georgia, Zarek Wilson outsplitting Bradley Dunham, 42.13-42.18, in a scintillating anchor leg. Auburn is also under the A standard in 2:49.17 for fifth.
