SEC Championships, Day 5 Prelims: Emma Sticklen, Luca Urlando Set Pace in 200 Flys

The SEC Championships are, among their many superlatives, the place for 200 butterfliers this week. Texas’ Emma Sticklen entered the meet with the fastest time in the nation on the women’s side. Luca Urlando is barely a month removed from setting the NCAA record in the men’s 200 fly.

Both set the pace Friday morning in preliminaries of the 200 flys, with the potential for fireworks on tap in the night session.

Friday’s night session will include the finals of women’s platform diving as well as the men’s and women’s 400 medley relays.

Women’s 200 butterfly

Emma Sticklen cruised to the top seed in the 200 fly, going 1:50.01. She has been 1:49.54 in season, which set the SEC record. She is the two-time reigning NCAA champion in the event. She lowers her pool record from NCAAs last year, which was 1:50.99.

Chasing her are three Tennessee swimmers in the A final, led by Sara Stolter, the second seed in 1:52.66. Texas’ hold on the team title is likely to be solidified further with Campbell Stoll third and Olivia Bray tied for fourth with South Carolina’s Greta Pelzek.

Men’s 200 butterfly

Luca Urlando didn’t hit the 1:37.17 speed he’d showed in January. But his 1:38.86 on Friday morning was more than a second clear as the top seed and downed the meet record of 1:39.00 he had set in 2022. It’s his race to lose, though the chasers are jumbled, with six on 1:40-point.

Martin Espernberger, the only one of the group to be sub 1:40 this year, was second in 1:40.10. His Tennessee teammate Bjorn Kammann is also in the A final at 1:40.81. Jake Magahey is the third seed in 1:40.31, .12 ahead of Auburn’s Danny Schmidt.

Women’s 100 backstroke

Josephine Fuller led the way in the 100 back with a time of 50.67. That may not be enough to wrest the favorite status away from Florida’s Bella Sims, who has branched out at this meet in her event selection. She was second in 50.76 on Friday morning, though her 49.93, which is the SEC record, is the only sub-50 swim of the field.

Texas’s Berit Berglund was the third seed in 51.41, .05 up on Eboni McCarty of Georgia. Florida was the only school with two A finalists.

Despite the Florida sophomore Marshall’s speed, eyes will be on Texas. Will Modglin was the top seed entering the meet, having gone 43.91. He went 44.64 in the morning. Hubert Kos is looming in third at 44.68, and Texas snuck a third A finalist in with Kyle Peck eighth.

Women’s 100 breaststroke

Tennessee has the top two seeds, with McKenzie Siroky leading the way in 57.41, a season-best time for her. Also clocking a season-best – since her season is only a month old – is Irish Olympic medalist Mona McSharry, who blasted a 57.42 from an early heat. She owns the meet record at 57.06 and the SEC record at 56.64, though she may not be ramped up to challenge those until NCAAs.

Anita Bottazzo of Florida, who entered with the to seed, was third in 58.24. Texas’ Piper Enge wasn’t far behind in 58.36.
