Schoeman Foils Aussie Last Day Sweep at Commonwealth Games; Thorpe Winds Up with 6 Gold, Thomas Bags 5

By Phillip Whitten

MANCHESTER, August 4. AS expected, Ian Thorpe swam to his sixth gold medal and Petria Thomas bagged her fourth and fifth as the Commonwealth Games came to a close this evening.

But South Africa's Roland Schoeman denied the Aussies a golden sweep tonight by winning the 50 free by the skin of his teeth.

Thorpe anchored the men's 4×100 meter medley relay to victory to become the third swimmer to win six golds at a single Commonwealth Games. Canada's Graham Smith first accomplished the feat in 1978 and fellow Australian, Susie O'Neill, matched it in 1998.

He also became the first man to win a total of 10 Commonwealth golds — he won four in Kuala Lumpur four years ago — an achievement matched only by O'Neill.

"It's been a fantastic Games, not only for Australia but for all teams. I'm just pleased to have been part of it," Thorpe said. "It's been a very successful Games for me personally, as well as everybody else."

Australia wound up with 27 out of a possible 42 gold medals. England followed with 10.

World champion Petria Thomas won the women's 200 meter butterfly and sparked an Aussie victory in the 4×100 medley relay tonight. She clocked 2:08.40 to win the fly, more than two seconds ahead of England's (and SMU's) Georgina Lee. "I wouldn't quite call it comfortable. It was a pretty tough race. I'm getting tired now," Thomas said afterwards.

In the medley relay, England led after the backstroke leg, followed by South Africa and Australia. South Africa's Sarah Poewe put the Springboks in front after the breaststroke, with England still second and Australia third. But Thomas passed the South Africans and brought Australia into a tie with England, leaving Jodie Henry to deliver the coup de grace.

Olympic and world champion Grant Hackett won the 1500 meter freestyle, as expected. His time — 14:54.29 — would be consideredd spectacular for anyone else, but foir Hackett, who wound up with three gold and two silver medals, it was a ho-hum swim.

Scotland's Graeme Smith was second, 13 seconds back and two seconds head of Aussie, Craig Stevens, in third.

Jim Piper won the 200m breast, but he was fortunate it wasn't a 210m breast, or he might have finished out of the medals.

Piper took a quick lead, splitting 30.07 at the 50 and 1:03.51 at the 100 — under WR pace. Only Scotlasnd's Ian Edmond and Canada's Morgan Knabe dared to stay close — a move that turned out to be a big mistake.

Piper kept up the pace on the third 50 and made the final turn more than a second-and-a-half ahead of Edmond in second. All he had to do was cruise home.

That's when this Piper had to pay.

Feeling athe effects of his quick pace, Piper struggled on the final lap, splitting 35.35 and touch in 2:13.10 — just fast enough to stave off fast-closing Terrence Parkin of South Africa (2:13.34) and aCanada's Michael Brown (2:13.82). Edmond faded to sixth, Knabe to eighth.

Australia's Jennifer Reilly took the 400 IM in 4:43.59, just fending off a hard-driving Elizabeth Van Welie of New Zealand.

"I'm stoked to finally get through and get gold at the end of a difficult week," Reilly, a bronze medallist in 1998 when she was 14, said.

In the medley relay, Matt Welsh put Australia in front on the backstroke. England's Adam Whitehead cut into Piper's lead on the breaststroke, but Geoff Huegill put the race away on the butterfly. Thorpe had no trouble bringing Australia home in a Games record 3:36.05. England was second in 3:38.37 with Canada third in 3:38.91.

Australia came ever-so-close to weinning every event on thius final day of the Games. But South African Roland Schoeman, a University of Arizona grad, denied them that distinction when he won the 50 free by the narrowest of margins–oned one-hundredth of a sedcond.

Schoeman, silver medalist in the 50 butterfly, took the 50 in 22.33 seconds, with Australia's Brett Hawke second in 22.34 and England's Mark Foster, 32,looking for his third straight title in the event, third in 22.47. Schoeman's reaction time was 3-hundredths faster than Hawke's and that, lassies and laddies, was the difference.

"That was spectacular," Schoeman said. "Being able to get up and compete against Brett and Mark and race them to the end. It's amazing."
