Sarah Sjostrom Runs Title Tally to 3 in Sette Colli Trophy Meet
A day after scaring the world record in the women’s 100-meter fly, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom threw down a meet-record time in the women’s 100-meter free.
Sjostrom clocked a time of 53.00 to beat Federica Pellegrini’s meet record of 53.55 from 2009. It also pushed her ahead of Bronte Campbell (53.04) for third in the world rankings this year. Only Cate Campbell and Femke Heemskerk have been faster with matching 52.69s.
Ranomi Kromowidjojo finished second in 53.65 to move to seventh in the world, while Erika Ferraioli placed third in 54.31. Pellegrini settled for fourth in 54.42.
That’s Sjostrom’s third title of the meet as she doubled up with the amazing 100 fly and 50 free swims yesterday.
Cameron van der Burgh shot to second in the world in the men’s 50-meter breast with a time of 27.01. That’s better than his 27.17 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup, and put him behind only Adam Peaty’s 26.88 from the British University Championships.
Nicolo Ossola took second in 27.51 with Andrea Toniato placing third in 27.56.
USA’s Cammile Adams uncorked a season best to win the women’s 200-meter fly in a close battle with Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos.
Adams clocked a 2:07.52 to down Jakabos’ 2:07.93. That swim lowered her sixth-ranked season best of 2:07.61 from the BHP Super Series, while Jakabos jumped to ninth in the world with her swim. Liliana Szilagyi hit the wall third tonight in 2:08.86.
Hungary’s Bence Biczo turned in a top time of 1:56.47 for the win in the men’s 200-meter fly. Italy’s Francesco Pavone placed second in 1:57.92 with Sweden’s Simon Sjodin earning third in 1:58.16.
Elena Gemo pocketed the women’s 100-meter back crown in 1:00.22 with Scotland’s Kathleen Dawson placing second in 1:00.93. Italy’s Carlotta Zofkova wound up third in 1:01.01.
Italy’s Simone Sabbioni put up a time of 54.15 to win the men’s 100-meter back. Christopher Ciccarese finished second in 54.51 with Luca Mencarini claiming third in 54.71.
Stefania Pirozzi claimed the women’s 400-meter IM title in 4:40.00. Jakabos picked up her second silver of the night with a 4:41.46, while Slovenia’s Anja Klinar rounded out the top three in 4:42.72.
Federico Turrini turned in a 4:19.07 to win the men’s 400-meter IM. Giorgio Gaetani placed second in 4:20.18 with Scotland’s Lewis Smith taking third in 4:22.26.
Sebastiaan Verschuren took home the men’s 200-meter free crown in 1:47.88. That swim is more than a second back of his sixth-ranked 1:46.07 from the Eindhoven Swim Cup.
Damiano Lestingi finished second in 1:48.44 with Danas Rapsys hitting the wall third in 1:48.51.
Ruta Meilutyte, the world leader with a 29.88 from the Canet stop, claimed the 50-meter breast title in 30.07. That’s faster than the second-ranked 30.39 by Yuliya Efimova from Russian Nationals.
Jennie Johansson took a distant second in 30.64 to move to fifth in the world, while Moniek Nijhuis placed third in 30.65 to tie her sixth-ranked season best from the Eindhoven Swim Cup.
