Sarah Sjostrom Runs Roughshod Over Swedish Grand Prix With 6 Wins
Sarah Sjostrom uncorked a six-victory weekend at the Swedish Grand Prix in Malmo as she dominated the two-day event.
Sjostrom, following a U.S. Open January-record 56.38 at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin earlier this month, cruised to a win in the women’s 100-meter fly in 57.13. Louise Hansson was the only other swimmer under 1:00 with a 59.84.
Sjostrom clipped her own Swedish record in the women’s 50-meter back with a 28.21. That swim cleared her 2015 record of 28.22 set as part of the FFN Golden Tour. Ida Lindborg finished second in 28.77. Lindborg later won the women’s 200-meter back in 2:15.73.
Shortly after nearly clocking a U.S. Open record in the women’s 50-meter free in Austin with a 24.17, Sjostrom didn’t lose too much speed as she won the event in 24.64. Magdalena Kuras finished nearly a second back with a 25.44.
Sjostrom collected her fourth win of the meet with a 54.27 in the women’s 100-meter free. Ida Marka-Varga picked up second-place honors in 55.68.
Sjostrom, who owns the Swedish record with a 59.98 from the 2015 Swim Cup, won the women’s 100-meter back in a time of 1:01.05. Lindborg put up another second-place finish behind Sjostrom with a 1:01.41.
Sjostrom’s sixth victory came by way of the women’s 50-meter fly. She clocked a sizzling time of 25.24 for the win. Amit Ivri took second with a time of 26.76.
Meanwhile, Sophie Hansson cruised to victory in the women’s 100-meter breast in 1:08.87. Hansson claimed her second title with a 31.89 in the women’s 50-meter breast. Hansson tripled with a winning time of 2:32.51 in the women’s 200-meter breast.
Additionally, Jaqueline Hippi clinched the women’s 200-meter IM title in 2:17.56. Hippi swept the IMs with a 4:53.56 in the women’s 400-meter IM.
Adam Paulsson put up a 4:28.78 to win the men’s 400-meter IM. Paulsson doubled up with a 1:51.71 in the men’s 200-meter free.
Erik Persson clocked a 2:12.80 to win the men’s 200-meter breast. Persson put up a 1:02.13 to top the men’s 100-meter breast for a second victory.
Marcus Schlesinger won the men’s 50-meter fly in 24.27. Schlesinger took home the men’s 100-meter fly title as well with a time of 54.21.
Christoffer Carlsen won the men’s 100-meter free in 50.46. Carlsen swept the sprint frees with a 23.28 in the men’s 50-meter free as he tied David Gamburg, who also clocked a 23.28 to share the title.
Victor Johansson turned in a 3:56.35 to top the men’s 400-meter free. Johansson won a second title with a time of 15:40.15 in the men’s 1500-meter free.
Andrea Murez claimed the women’s 200-meter free in 2:00.62, while Hanna Eriksson posted a 9:09.34 to win the women’s 800-meter free.
Keren Seibner put up a 2:13.67 to win the women’s 200-meter fly, while Erica Dahlgren won the women’s 400-meter free in 4:24.46.
Alexander Morgan topped the men’s 50-meter breast in 29.10, while Yakov Toumarkin hit the wall in 55.83 to win the men’s 100-meter back.
Jesper Bjork posted a 2:01.32 to win the men’s 200 fly, while Jonatan Kopelev snagged the men’s 50-meter back title in 25.35.
Simon Sjodin also topped the men’s 200-meter IM in 2:01.48.
