Santa Clarita Sectionals Day Three Cancelled Due To Storms
One benefit of swimming in California is that you get to train in outdoor pools and get a killer tan (along with those infamous tanlines). An unfortunate risk is that tonight’s session at Santa Clarita sectionals can be cancelled due to inclement weather. That’s exactly what happened.
Today was scheduled to be a big day for many swimmers. The men’s and women’s 200 backstroke, 400 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, and 800 free relay were all scheduled, with many swimmers aiming for junior nationals, nationals, and Olympic trials cuts.
However, during the second heat of the women’s 200 backstroke prelims, thunder creeped up on the venue and timed finals were rescheduled for 2:00 pm after a half-hour weather delay. The rest of the women’s 200 backstroke prelims were contested and only three heats of the men’s 200 backstroke prelims were able to finish before storms again halted the meet.
At this point, the rest of day three was called off in a very dramatic and unfortunate day for many California and Nevada swimmers.
Tomorrow’s events are scheduled to be the 200 individual medley, women’s 800 freestyle, 50 freestyle, men’s 1500 freestyle, and the 400 medley relay. Among other possible highlights could be Abbey Weitzeil‘s 50 freestyle, as she will not be racing the event in Kazan in just under two weeks.
