Lillian Benwell has given her verbal commitment to the University of San Diego. The high school senior hails from Leander, Texas.
Benwell told Swimming World,
“I chose USD because I immediately felt a connection with the team and coaching staff. USD is a perfect fit for my academic and athletic goals. I am excited about the program and look forward to swimming every day on a beautiful campus with an amazing and powerful group of women. Go Toreros!”
Last season Benwell switched to teams to train with Brendan Hansen at Austin Swim Club. This summer she secured a Summer Juniors cut and finished third in the 200 breaststroke at Speedo Sectionals in Austin, success she attributes to swimming for Hansen.
Benwell is a fairly versatile swimmer. Her best short course yards times are:
- 100 Breast 1:04.93
- 200 Breast 2:17.36
- 100 Fly 56.31
- 200 IM 2:04.97
- 400 IM 4:25.82
At the 2016 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships the Toreros finished sixth. In the 200 breaststroke, Benwell would have finished seventh. Then junior Bri Jurries (2:11.83) won the event. Allie Andrade (2:25.18) will be the highest finisher on campus when Benwell arrives in California next fall. Benwell would also be a 400 IM A finalist and 200 IM B finalist.
