Sam Sauerbrei of the Boulder City Henderson Heat Wave and Boulder City High School in Nevada has committed to the University of Iowa. Sauerbrei looks to supply some depth to the Hawkeyes roster as a fly, breast and IM specialist.
Sauerbrei’s best fly times currently stand at a 51.06 in 100-yard race and a solid 1:49.40 in the 200-yard gauntlet. His 200-yard mark would have been the second fastest time for an Iowa swimmer this past season.
In the IM’s, he sits at a 1:52.09 200-yard IM and a 3:57.73 400-yard IM, both of which are in Iowa’s top three. Although these are his strongest events, he also provides a 58.52 100-yard breast.
In long course, Sauerbrei swims a 2:05.93 200-meter fly to go along with his 2:11.68 200-yard IM and 4:39.81 400-yard IM.
“He is excited to continue his progress in the Hawkeye program after coming on strong over the past year,” says Heat Wave head coach Mike Polk. “We have had a swimmer at Iowa before [Gianni Sesto] that did real well, and expect that Sam will as well.”
In the Nevada Division I-A Southern Region championships, Sauerbrei took first in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breast. This should set him up well for Nevada’s I-A state championships, which begin Saturday, May 16 in Carson City.
