Saint Thomas Dominates Minnesota (A) High School State Meet

Saint Thomas was victorious at the Minnesota (A) High School State Championships. The team scored 430 points, nearly 200 more than second place Breck Blake.

Saint Thomas started the day strong, winning the 200-yard medley relay. Backstroke William Burns, breaststroker Colin Glass, butterflier Jack Foster and freestyler William Mayleben posted a time of 1:34.99. Red Wing finished in second place with a time of 1:35.63, and Breck Blake touched third in 1:37.30.
Saint Thomas’ Warren Sexson touched first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.79. His teammate, Tommy Weiss, took third in 1:42.40. Simley’s Michael Modica touched second in 1:41.20.
Will Grassle of Breck Blake took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:54.58. Glass and Foster finished second and third, respectively. Glass touched in 1:57.02 and Foster posted a time of 1:57.17.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Grand Rapids’ Matt Allison took win in 20.91. He was followed by Fergus Falls’ Luke Raitz, who touched in 21.11, and St. Thomas’ Hunter Nielsen, who finished in 21.20.
Simley’s Nathan Stone took the diving competition with a score of 462.65. He was followed by Northfield’s Jack Cuddy and Dassel Cokato Litchfield’s Taylor LaZarre.
Fairbault’s Paul Sadergaski earned a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.04. Weiss was second in 50.47, and Ben Walker of Austin touched third in 50.77.
Modica brought home a win in the 100-yard freestyle, touching in 45.77. Allison was second in 46.11, and Hutchinson’s Matt Trettin rounded out the top three with a time of 46.74.
Sexson picked up his second win of the day in the 500-yard freestyle. The senior touched in 4:35.36. WINA Griffin WOlner was second in 4:41.60, and Spencer Pruett of Breck Blake touched in 4:48.89 to round out the top three.
Saint Thomas brought home its second relay title in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Nielsen, Mayleben, Eric Ruzicka and Weiss finished in 1:25.04. Simley touched over two seconds later in 1:27.14. Austin finished in 1:27.28 to take third.
Red Wing’s Hunter Connelly brought home a victory in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 48.87. Oronto’s Will Brenton touched second in 50.81. Sartell-St. Stephen’s Mitchell Dockendorf rounded out the top three with a time of 53.24.
Glass took the crown in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.86. Alexandria’s Nic Chromey touched second in 58.11, and Mayleben brought home a third place finish with a time of 58.70.
St. Thomas swept the relays with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team consisted of Nielsel, Weiss, Ruzicka and Sexson and posted a time of 3:06.11. Simley touched second in 3:12.05, and Breck Blake rounded out the top three with a time of 3:13.62.
At the meet, 29 teams scored points.
