All sorts of records fell as Texas cranked out a win in the men’s 400-yard medley relay at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Texas’ John Shebat (45.36), Will Licon (50.69), Joseph Schooling (43.34) and Jack Conger (41.29) unleashed a 3:00.68 for the win. That swim blasted Texas’ previous U.S. Open and NCAA record of 3:01.23 from last year. California’s American record of 3:01.60 from last year remained on the books due to Schooling’s Singapore nationality.
That’s Texas’ 13th victory in the event’s history at NCAAs, breaking a tie with Stanford atop the rankings.

Texas is having a historic meet thus far, capturing five of the first seven titles on offer. Texas holds the record for most wins in a single meet with 11 from 2001, and should have a shot at breaking that record.
California’s Ryan Murphy broke the American and NCAA record in the 100-yard back with a scorching 43.51. That’s the first sub-44 second swim ever, beating Nick Thoman’s American record of 44.07 from 2013 as part of SwimMAC, as well as Murphy’s NCAA record of 44.17 from NCAAs last year.
Murphy (43.51), Josh Prenot (50.71), Justin Lynch (45.03) and Long Gutierrez (42.03) placed second in 3:01.28 tonight, while Louisville’s Grigory Tarasevich (45.24), Carlos Claverie (51.62), Pedro Coutinho (45.85) and Trevor Carroll (42.02) placed third in 3:04.73.
Missouri (3:04.99), Florida (3:05.19), Tennessee (3:05.23), Indiana (3:05.57) and NC STate (3:08.12) rounded out the top eight.
Alabama would have placed third with a 3:04.32 from the consolation heat.
