It was quite a day for Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Ryan Hoffer.

The 17-year-old won the Speedo Winter Jr. National Championships (West) men’s 100-yard freestyle in record setting fashion. His time of 41.23 set a new meet record and a 17-18 National Age Group record. He broke Caeleb Dressel’s old National Age Group record of 41.90.

Erica Sullivan of Sandpipers of Nevada won the women’s 1650-yard freestyle with a meet record time of 16:02.32. Nitro Swimming’s Sean Grieshop won the men’s event in 14:45.88, also a meet record.

In the women’s 200-yard backstroke, Rhyan White of Wasatch Front Fish Market won with a time of 1:53.54. Sierra Marlins’ Bryce Mefford won the men’s event in 1:42.18.

Ozaukee Aquatics’ Katie Drabot continued her strong meet with a win in the women’s 100-yard freestyle. She posted a meet record time of 48.32.

Grace Zhao of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics won the women’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.23, another meet record. A Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics swimmer also won the men’s event. Jeremy Babinet set a new meet record with a time of 1:55.91.

Austin Swim Club’s Dakota Luther earned the victory in the women’s 200-yard butterfly. She posted a time of 1:55.60, yet another meet record. Alex Liang of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics took the men’s event with a time of 1:45.64.

Ryan’s day was quite a bit more than just a 17-18 NAG.

And despite a world record or two at the 2015 MOA and various other NAGs at Juniors x 2 and NCAP and Katie Drabot’s 27 wins, when Hoffer’s 100 free is backed by a :21.20 backstroke MR leadoff, :19.06 50 free, :45.46 100 Fly and :45.58 100 back, the :41.23 needs to be the Swimming World performance of the week. Hear me, Jeff Commings?!

After all the years of Longhorn sprinters and big championship meets — Hoffer’s :41.23 was a POOL RECORD at Jamail Swim Center.

The American Record is Nathan Adrian’s :41.08 from 2009. Adrian only has one non-suit era swim faster than Hoffer, :41.10, from 2011. No other Americans have ever been faster than Hoffer.

Ryan is now #2 American all-time, as a 17 year old High School JUNIOR, and #4 overall performer with only the US Open record holder Vladimir Morozov (Russia; USC) and Cesar Cielo (Brazil; Auburn), the 50 and 100 LCM WR holder, along with 2012 100 LCM Olympic Champion for America, Nathan Adrian (CAL), wedged in front of Hoffer.

The 17-18 NAG (:41.90, 20th on all-time list) had been held by Caeleb Dressel, who won the 50 Free this spring as a freshman for Florida (:18.77)

The 2015 NCAA D1 championship was won by Alabama’s Gholkmeev (sp?) in :41.56.

Congratulations, Ryan.

Further perspective on Hoffer’s swims:

50 Free :19.06 (National HS record: :19.29 Caeleb Dressel, 11/13; Dressel NCAA
champion 4/14 for Florida)
:45.46 100 Fly (National HS record :45.52 Joseph Schooling; Schooling NCAA champion
4/15 for Texas)
:45.58 100 Back (National HS record :45.34 by Ryan Murphy (Ind. school); Public school
record :45.49, David Nolan); Murphy NCAA champion 4/15 for CAL)

:41.23 100 free (National HS Record :42.34 by David Nolan; after winning several NCAA
titles for Stanford, Nolan finished there and moved to Bowman’s elite
squad in Tempe, just 5-6 miles down the road from where Hoffer trains)
2015 D1 NCAA winner Kristian Golhkmeev (sp?) from Alabama, by way of
Greece, at :41.56.

Hoffer now has the eighth-fastest PERFORMANCE all-time and only guys who have won NCAAs (Morozov, Cielo, Adrian) are faster and of course they were ALL much older when they went faster. If you throw out performances made in “hi-tek” suits in 2K8-’09 (four) Hoffer has the third fastest performance all-time behind Morozov’s record 40.76 from two years ago and Adrian’s 41.10 from 2K11.

Nt too shabby for a 17-year-old boy!

Let us not frget too that Hoffer’s still in his senior year in high school.

When he goes off to college next fall after winning four golds and setting four wrs Rio (50-100 free, anchoring wr-setting 400 free-medley relays!) no telling how good he’ll become — especially since he’ll be training under that GREAT UCLA sprinter of yesteryear, Tom Jager Washington State.

What’s that u say, the Cougs DON’T field a men’s team?

No problem.

Hoffer and Reece Whitely’ll be the team and those two alone’ll score enuf to put WSU among the Top Ten teams, right, TJ! Or mebbe w/this Dynamic Duo in tow Jager can convince UCLA AD Dan Guerrero to reinstate men’s swimming his alma mater after a two-decade absence.

Bill: Your flights of fancy may be fun on occasion, but in this instance please keep in mind that Hoffer is still in his JUNIOR year of high school.
