Cal senior Ryan Hoffer won his second event of the 2021 NCAAs in Greensboro with a 44.25 in the 100 butterfly, just 0.01 off his prelims time, as he held off Louisville senior Nick Albiero (44.32) in the final five yards.

Hoffer backs up his 50 freestyle win from last night as his time this morning put him fifth on the all-time list, while Albiero is now tied for sixth just behind Hoffer. Albiero should be a threat tomorrow in the 200 butterfly while Hoffer will tackle the 100 freestyle. This was almost the closest margin of victory as Rafal Szukala of Iowa won the 1994 title over Florida’s Stephen Clarke by 0.04.

Cal is just five points down to Texas at this point in the meet after Ryan Hoffer’s win.

“What I am doing right now is for the team. That ‘W’ brings us one step closer and that makes me even more happy,” Ryan Hoffer said after the race.

Georgia’s Camden Murphy placed third (44.42) and moved up to 11th on the all-time list as he looked to win the race on the final 25, kicking out the furthest on the final 25 but ending up third at the touch. He should also be a factor in the 200 butterfly.

Texas’ Alvin Jiang, who will join Albiero later tonight in the 100 back, was fourth at 44.50 ahead of Missouri’s Danny Kovac (44.66) and Virginia Tech’s Antani Ivanov (44.67).

Florida’s Eric Friese (44.79) and Georgia’s Luca Urlando (44.99) also swam in the very fast championship final.

California now has six NCAA titles in the 100 butterfly as  Ryan Hoffer joins Par Arvidsson (1979, 1980), Duje Draganja (2005) and Tom Shields (2010, 2012, 2013) as winners of the event for the Golden Bears.
