The Russian national synchronised swimming team won the gold medal in the women’s team technical routine at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan. The leaders of the preliminary round even managed to improve their result by half a point in the final.
This outcome was predicted by many sports experts because the Russian national team has maintained its dominance in synchronised swimming for several decades. But the most intriguing question was whether the other competitors will be able to challenge the hosts or will have to limit their ambitions to the second and third places.
The tussle for silver and bronze medals was going to be quite tough. China, Spain, Ukraine and some other countries were identified as equal contenders for medals and it seemed impossible to foresee which of the teams will be able to capture the hearts of the audience and judges. Brazil’s technical routine featuring female bikers came as an unexpected surprise and brought some turmoil in the main pack of leaders. However, their performance will only stay in spectators’ memories because eventually the Latin Americans failed to make it onto the podium.
The vacant spots on the podium were taken by Asian representatives. If the Chinese athletes were expected to be placed high, one of the Japanese synchro swimmers burst into tears as soon as the score flashed on the screen. Performing twelfth, the Japanese team jumped on the podium in third edging out Ukraine.
