Roman Jones, Samuel Quarles Verbally Commit to Cal for 2023-24

NEW COMMITS: The University of California, Berkeley has picked up two new verbal commitments for the 2023-24 season and beyond from Chatham, N.J. native Roman Jones and Samuel Quarles of Coronado, Calif.

Both talented swimmers will join Rob Alexy, Nikolas Antoniou and Keaton Jones as a member of the Golden Bears’ Class of 2027.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of California Berkeley. I chose Cal because of the amazing team atmosphere, great coaching staff, and the combination of world-class academics and athletic excellence. Thank you to my parents, family, friends, and all of my coaches, and teammates who have supported me along the way. I could not be more excited to be part of the Cal family. GO BEARS!!”

Jones, who does his club swimming with Jersey Flyers Aquatic Club, most recently earned best times in five different events at the EEX Holiday Classic last weekend. This past summer, he won the 100m fly and was the 100m free runner-up at Richmond Futures and took second in the 100m fly at Richmond Sectionals back in May.

His best times include:

  • 100 fly – 47.13
  • 100 back – 48.11
  • 100 free – 44.30
  • 50 free – 20.50
  • 200 free – 1:38.87
  • 50 back – 23.51
  • 200 back – 1:50.63

Currently a junior at The Pingry School, Jones finished ninth in the 100 fly and 10th in the 100 back as a freshman at the New Jersey Meet of Champions.

SAMUEL QUARLES

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am super pumped to announce my verbal commitment to continue my Academic and Athletic career at the University of California-Berkeley. I want to thank my mom, dad, sister, friends, family members, and coaches who have helped me reach this point. #gobears”

Quarles trains year-round with Coronado Swim Association-Team Elite and picked up six new lifetime bests at Juniors West earlier this month. Over the summer, he finaled in two events at the Speedo Summer West Championships after placing fourth in the 200m free and fifth in the 100m free at Santa Clarita Sectionals.

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.47
  • 100 free – 44.47
  • 200 free – 1:36.50
  • 100 back – 50.73
  • 100 fly – 48.55
  • 200 fly – 1:49.79

Quarles is a junior at Coronado High School.
