16-year-old phenom Regan Smith became the fourth-fastest performer in history in the 200-yard back during the first night of Sectionals in Akron. Smith, representing Riptide, swam her signature event in a blistering time of 1:48.30. With that mark, Smith smashed the 15-16 National Age Group record of 1:50.66 set by Kylie Stewart in 2013.

That time was exactly one second off Kathleen Baker’s American record of 1:47.30 set five days earlier at the NCAA championships in Columbus, Ohio. Only Baker, Elizabeth Pelton (1:47.84) and Missy Franklin (1:47.91) have ever been quicker. Her previous best time entering the day had been 1:51.30, and she posted a 1:50.01 in prelims, giving her a combined drop of exactly four seconds.

Finishing behind Smith was Michigan Lakeshore’s Kathryn Ackerman in 1:56.36. Third went to Southeastern’s Abigail Harter (1:59.43).

On the men’s side in the 200 back, Michigan Lakeshore’s Ian Miskelley won in 1:46.87, ahead of Performance Elite’s Jack Fitzpatrick (1:47.87). Firestone Akron’s Kaden Smekso took third in 1:48.14.

Drop’s Ashley Turak won the women’s 50 free in 22.55, well ahead of JCC Sailfish’s Olivia Livingston (22.90) and Racer X’s Zoe Skirboll (23.06). In the men’s 50, Michigan Lakeshore’s Skylar Cook-Weeks took first in 20.30, with teammate Cameron Peel second in 20.56. Third went to Gregory Kalin in 20.63.

Lake Erie Silver Dolphins’ Laura Goettler won the women’s 200 breast in 2:11.62, well ahead of Ackerman (2:14.39) and Michigan Lakeshore’s Madeline Greaves (2:15.66). In the men’s 200 breast, Performance Elite’s Joshua Matheny took the win in 1:58.26, followed by West Ottawa’s Derek Maas (2:00.10) and Firestone Akron’s Richard Kurlich (2:01.58).

Michigan Lakeshore’s team of Caroline SissonLillian Brandt, Ackerman and Elle Giesler won the women’s 4×200 free relay in 7:23.08. Riptide took second in 7:27.10 after Smith led off in 1:44.49, and Irish Aquatics took third in 7:35.45.
