17-year-old Regan Smith re-broke her world junior record in the 100 back on Saturday morning at the Counsilman Classic in Indianapolis. Smith swam a 58.55 to lower her own world junior record she set earlier this year at 58.82 at the Bloomington Pro Series in May. She is the top seed heading to finals tonight ahead of Indiana’s Grace Haskett (1:03.06) and Club Wolverine’s Mariella Venter (1:03.35).

Smith is now tied for second in the world rankings this year with Canada’s Taylor Ruck and is currently tied for eighth all-time with Ruck. She is also the fastest American for 2019 in the 100 back.

Smith will be representing the United States at the 2019 World Championships in the 200 back, which she did not compete in this weekend in Indianapolis. The United States will be sending Olivia Smoliga and world record holder Kathleen Baker to swim the 100 back at Worlds. Smith will be swimming the 200 alongside Baker in Gwangju in five weeks.

She is currently ninth in the US right now in the 200 free with that time and is seventh in the 400 free. Smith certainly has an outside chance to make the 4×200 free relay this summer at Worlds and maybe even in 2020 at the Olympic Games.
