Regan Smith Blasts 100 Back NAG Record With 50.58 Leading off 400 Medley Relay
16-year-old Regan Smith was not entered in any backstroke events this weekend at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals West Championships in Austin, Texas, but she did lead off her club team’s 400 medley relay team on Thursday night. Smith swam a 50.58 to lower her own 15-16 NAG record in the 100 back.
Smith’s old NAG record was a 50.84 from Speedo Sectionals in March. She furthered the distance between her and second all-time, Isabelle Stadden, also from Minnesota.
If Smith was in college, she would have the second fastest time in the nation in Division I, only sitting behind Wisconsin junior Beata Nelson, who broke the American Record last week.
Smith has yet to commit to a school yet as she is only a junior in high school.
Smith moved up to 16th all-time in the event, passing Ali DeLoof (50.59, 2016) and sitting just behind Hannah Stevens (50.57, 2017).
