Reece Whitley Hits Routine 1:53 200 Breast in Cal’s Dual With USC

The third ranked Cal Golden Bears opened up their 2021 semester with a two-day dual meet win with Southern Cal 107-76. The Golden Bears are the defending national champions with their win in 2019 after not having a chance to defend the title last year in 2020.

Results

Junior Reece Whitley, last year’s national top seed in the 200 breaststroke, won the 200 breast on Saturday with a 1:53.75 over teammate Hugo Gonzalez (1:58.38). Whitley already had the top time in the country this season with a 1:48 last semester as he could challenge the national record of 1:47.12 by the time NCAAs come around.

Whitley also swam the breaststroke leg on Cal’s winning medley relay with a 24.25, following Daniel Carr (21.70). Ryan Hoffer (20.03) and Björn Seeliger (18.64) closed for a 1:24.62, which puts them seventh nationally thus far this season.

Carr also won the 200 backstroke with a 1:43.23, which is off his 1:40 from last semester that puts him fourth nationally. He won ahead of USC’s Harry Homans (1:44.91), who took the win in the 400 IM at 3:51.12. Seeliger also won the 50 free at 19.42 ahead of USC’s Nikola Miljenic (20.13), who won the 100 fly at 46.66.

Senior transfer Zach Yeadon won the 500 at 4:22.21 in his first official meet with the Golden Bears after transferring from the University of Notre Dame. He won ahead of senior Sean Grieshop (4:23.07).

Alexei Sancov also won the 200 freestyle for the Trojans at 1:33.79 ahead of Cal’s Trenton Julian (1:33.91) and Destin Lasco (1:34.66).

Cal finished the 400 free relay with a 2:50.09 with the team of Hoffer (42.12), Carr (43.19), Lasco (42.76) and Seeliger (42.02).
